Tune Into New Pure Tone Screening Video Tutorial Modules!
We know that screener training, and retraining,
is an ongoing need for programs serving young children. By viewing these modules, and accessing hands-on assistance from
a local pediatric audiologist or skilled trainer, your program staff can gain the skills needed to reliably screen the hearing of the children you serve. We als
o understand that training time
is limited, so most modules are only 4-5 minutes in length, and are grouped into four learning sessions:
- Modules 1 - 4 offer an introductory overview of how Pure Tone screening is done, and cover important elements of hearing screening program development.
- Modules 5 - 7 provide an overview of equipment components and a detailed, step-by-step look at teaching (conditioning) a child to respond to tones, conducting screening at appropriate decibel and frequency levels, and accurately documenting a child's responses.
- Modules 8 - 9 present skill-development examples (including practicing on adults before attempting to screen children) and strategies for successfully engaging young children in the screening process.
- Modules 10 -11 cover a recommended protocol, follow-up steps, and tracking resources.
In addition to the tutorial modules, under 'Implementation Tools,' you will see many other helpful
resources, including the: 
- Teach Me Checklist outlining essential screening elements that a pediatric audiologist or skilled screener should demonstrate to learners.
Keep in mind that even skilled screeners may not be able to complete Pure Tone screening on approximately 20% of children 3-5 years of age, because the procedure requires children to be developmentally able to consistently provide a behavioral response to sound.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) screening can also be an appropriate screening tool for children in this age range. If you are not sure whether Pure Tone or OAE screening should be your primary screening tool, check state regulations and consult with a local audiologist and your Health Services Advisory Committee.
