Transforming Places for Living - Strategies from
Torrey Architecture

Torrey Architecture is known for historic preservation, adaptive re-use, religious and commercial architecture. But residential projects have always been a specialty.

In this season of renewal it’s time to think creatively about improving your home. David W. Torrey, AIA has been transforming homes for over thirty years, and the results have benefitted homeowners with increased property values and an improved quality of life. Here, we share examples of some of the strategies we’ve used for our clients to maximize the usefulness and beauty of their homes.
Create Living Space in your Attic
Three gable dormers on the street facade were the most visible enhancement of this 1920's farmhouse. The shed dormer addition at the rear was set back to minimize its visibility from the street.
This Attic was transformed with a skylit rear shed dormer and three front gable dormers, eave storage, new flooring, insulation and concealed HVAC systems.
Make a More Welcoming Entrance
A new Entry Porch for a formerly understated front door now provides cover from the weather and handrails for safety while offering a warm and inviting entrance to this fully renovated home.
Open up Walls to Connect Living Spaces
This new Kitchen was opened to the Dining Room and stairway beyond. An island provides a pivotal workspace, breakfast counter and serving table for the Dining and Living Rooms.
Dine in your Backyard
Even a small addition can connect interior and exterior spaces as the Dining Bay accomplished for this renovated historic home.
Remove Upper Cabinets from Exterior Kitchen Walls
In a Kitchen renovation, built-in tall storage on interior walls can free up exterior walls for windows to bring in light and views.
Add Living Space Below Grade
A dark basement is often overlooked as a resource for living space, but a planted and terraced areawell can introduce light and views of nature into a lower level Family Room.
Work from Home
This Home Office was created from unfinished space in the homeowner's attached shed.
Add a Rooftop Room for Dramatic New Vistas
Built upwards to experience the sky, this tower Living Room included a wraparound window seat providing panoramic views of its spectacular site.
Remove a Chimney to Open up Living Space
Eliminating an unused chimney allowed the Kitchen and Family Room to be united as the active hub of family life.
Add Curves for Visual Delight
Curves can be constructed without substantial added cost. The result can transform the mundane into the delightful.
