A Moving Experience with an Historic House

The Ebenezer Stone House was constructed in 1788 facing a country lane in pastoral Newton, Massachusetts, and served as a working farmhouse for the Volante family well into the 20th century. Today, this historic home has been given a new outlook facing Dedham Street while being updated with all the amenities and infrastructure of a modern home.
This property now has the best of both worlds: authentic New England charm upstairs with an all-new stone-faced foundation and spacious, light-filled basement below.

The 1788 house (above) was jacked off its rubble cellar walls, moved to its new location and new concrete foundations poured (below).

Torrey Architecture provided the renderings and permit documents required by the City of Newton's Historical Commission and Building Department to relocate and restore this listed house on its own local historic district, allowing for the subdivision of its owner's double lot. The Ebenezer Stone House now faces Dedham Street, with its restored wrap-around porches open to a sunny private yard.

Following a dramatic and technically challenging house-moving procedure, the goals of historic preservation have been realized for one of the oldest houses in this Newton neighborhood.
