IACP Foundation 2018: Meet the IACP Foundation Board Members -  Part Two

IACP Foundation Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.
A Message from IACP Foundation Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.

The IACP Foundation (IACPF) is so thankful for the amazing individuals that comprise the IACP Foundation Board.  There is a great range of experience and an amazing feeling of collaboration.  IACPF is growing and stretching, and it has a new energy that is bringing fresh eyes and ideas to the forefront.  Student involvement, engagement and education has always been the priority, but IACPF is really knocking it out of the park!

IACP Foundation is so excited for the energy and commitment the 2018 Board Members are bringing to board.

We want to make sure you know who is leading the IACPF Board of Directors, not only as a leader, but as an individual.  IACPF is often behind the scenes working with students and other programs, so you don't always see or hear about the individuals working on those projects.  We want to recognize these hardworking board members and help you put a face with the name and help you get to know them on a more personal level.

It may seem like we are making light of the positions our Board Members have by asking these questions, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!  As individuals, we each have thoughts, opinions and different life experiences that shape us.  As someone who is passionate about the future of compounding, we all need to come together for a common goal, and in my experience from working on the Hill - sometimes it helps to find common ground outside of the office.  This can build a bond and remind us that we are all human, we all have a common goal and we can learn from each other while working together.

As we highlight the IACPF Board Members, we hope you see them in a new light and have as much fun as we did learning about them and what brought the to the compounding industry!  If you haven't had a chance, please read Part One HERE.

What was your first job?
First nonpaying job was greeting people and answering the phone at the funeral home my parents owned. My first paying job was as a Sonic carhop.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
Worked in a retail pharmacy in high school, and in college as a technician in a hospital where the technicians performed the compounding. We had a wet lab for pharmaceutics - I liked it and decided that was where my focus was going to be. I have been lucky to be witness to the resurgence of compounding in the retail sector and the birth of "homecare" where patients receive compounded medications in pumps at home or at work and go about living their lives.

What are your hobbies?
Hike, golf, scuba dive, ski, fish, and read - just about anything outside.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Any of my hobbies, spend time with family and friends, anything that allow me to decompress and recharge.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
I was a senior in the accounting program in college when I quit college and worked as a reservationist at Hertz rental cars, then went back to college for pharmacy. I loved accounting but could not be in an office all the time. Now you know where my attention to detail comes from.

Where is your favorite place to be?
With my husband and kids. Beach.

How do you drink your coffee?
I love the smell of coffee, don't like the taste. Tea is my go to, straight without sweetener, or chai tea with soy milk.

What do you love most about serving patients?
Helping solve medication administration problems to make their life better. Having worked with children for over 10 years many sterile and nonsterile medications have to be compounded for pediatric and neonatal use because they are not available commercially for a variety of reasons. There are unique challenges with such a wide range of patient ages, weights and dosages plus weight and age based dosing from birth to 22 years old. Also, we are able to drill down to determine specific causes of a metabolic or seizure disorder that with specialized compounded treatment children can live longer productive lives. It is rewording when we can ease the administration of medication burden for families through compounded medication options.

Tracy Acosta, PharmD - IACP Foundation President-elect

Tracy Acosta, PharmD, IACP Foundation President-elect
What was your first job?
Camp Counselor at an Equestrian Center.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
As a recent college graduate, I started working at my pharmacy as a clerk. I remember watching the technicians make troches through the window to the lab. I knew I wanted to be a part of whatever THAT was.

What are your hobbies?
Traveling, cooking, enjoying live music, musicals, and Hamilton. Hamilton really is it's own category.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Go to the farmers market or explore new food trucks.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
I rode horses for 10 years.

Where is your favorite place to be?
On top of Mauna Kea with my Dad.

How do you drink your coffee?
With a little cream.

What do you love most about serving patients?
I love being able to provide medications that can improve a patient's comfort when they didn't know it was possible.
