IACP Foundation 2018: Meet the IACP Foundation Board Members -  Part One

IACP Foundation Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.
A Message from IACP Foundation Executive Vice President Cynthia Blankenship, Esq.

The IACP Foundation (IACPF) is so thankful for the amazing individuals that comprise the IACP Foundation Board.  There is a great range of experience and an amazing feeling of collaboration.  IACPF is growing and stretching, and it has a new energy that is bringing fresh eyes and ideas to the forefront.  Student involvement, engagement and education has always been the priority, but IACPF is really knocking it out of the park!

IACP Foundation is so excited for the energy and commitment the 2018 Board Members are bringing to board.

We want to make sure you know who is leading the IACPF Board of Directors, not only as a leader, but as an individual.  IACPF is often behind the scenes working with students and other programs, so you don't always see or hear about the individuals working on those projects.  We want to recognize these hardworking board members and help you put a face with the name and help you get to know them on a more personal level.

It may seem like we are making light of the positions our Board Members have by asking these questions, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!  As individuals, we each have thoughts, opinions and different life experiences that shape us.  As someone who is passionate about the future of compounding, we all need to come together for a common goal, and in my experience from working on the Hill - sometimes it helps to find common ground outside of the office.  This can build a bond and remind us that we are all human, we all have a common goal and we can learn from each other while working together.

As we highlight the IACPF Board Members, we hope you see them in a new light and have as much fun as we did learning about them and what brought the to the compounding industry!

What was your first job?
Working as a clerk in the video department in an independent pharmacy.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
Compounding was introduced to me by my boss who had just come back from a seminar in Houston and I fell in LOVE.  I love to cook so I was intrigued with following a formula (recipe) and being able to custom tailor medication to fit the patient's needs.

What are your hobbies?
Hmmm......Life is all about experiences, you have to take advantage of every moment.  I enjoy traveling with my husband, I cater on the side (my full-time career in my next life ) and crossing things off my "life list" with friends, family and my dogs.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
In the summer, enjoy my backyard, pool, BBQ and fire pit  with family and friends.  In the fall/winter, I love to go wine tasting in Napa and watching Alabama Football.  Roll Tide and Cheers!

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
I went to school in Hawaii and graduated high school when I was 16. I believe in lifelong learning and am always trying to better myself and look for new ways to further my education and sharpen my tools.

Where is your favorite place to be?
On a beach!

How do you drink your coffee?
At home, cream no sugar. Out and about, I'll take a cappuccino please!

What do you love most about serving patients?
Being able to be a part of a team that makes a difference.  I will never forget all of the experiences I have had working with Hospice patients and Autistic children.  #Blessed

What was your first job?
My very first job was working at a fast-food drive-in and I did it from high school through college. My first pharmacy job was working as a nuclear pharmacist with Syncor (now Cardinal). We were the only nuclear pharmacy in the state of Indiana. It was a fun job, but the hours were not really compatible with starting a family.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
When I started working at Indiana University Hospital, they had a large compounding lab. I loved compounding class in school and offered to cover the compounding pharmacist's vacations. When he decided to retire 6 years later, I was ready to switch from Homecare and applied for the job. The pharmacist actually gave me a written quiz about compounding too, in addition to my interview. It must have gone well, because I got the job and have been the compounding pharmacist for Indiana University for 24+ years.

What are your hobbies?
Going to concerts/music, doing 5Ks, traveling, and watching sports.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Shopping, going to the pool, and watching sports.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
I learned to play tuba my senior year in high school (from clarinet/bass clarinet), tried out for the Purdue Marching Band, and was the second female tuba player in the Purdue All American Marching Band.

Where is your favorite place to be?
Love the mountains - Sedona is best.

How do you drink your coffee?
Don't drink coffee.

What do you love most about serving patients?
I work at a teaching hospital and we get all of the unusual cases. It is fun and challenging to help the medical staff come up with an alternative treatment for a difficult case. It is very satisfying to know that you made a huge difference in a patient's quality of life.

What was your first job?
At the age of 13 I worked in an Apothecary as a Clerk.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
I purchased my own pharmacy in 1979 in a town called Lynnfield, Massachusetts with a population of a 11,000 people and my location was down the street from a group of PMS physicians which were writing prescriptions for 400mg progesterone suppositories which were difficult for them to find pharmacies that could compound these prescriptions. They referred me to PCCA which I signed up and gained access to the formula and product.  From that point I was providing a service that patients appreciated my pharmacy for providing access to the suppositories. From that time on I grew in the compounding world servicing with a need that was always appreciated by the patients.

What are your hobbies?
I play golf, make homemade wine, I love to read, do small construction at home, attend plays and I watch sports on TV or go to games.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Travel to seacoast locations and walk the beaches or trails.  If there is a new play at the theater I would look forward to seeing, and I have children and grandchildren that I am with that always have something to attend or just to be with.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
I played Hockey up to 50 years old with over 20 ,30, 40 50 hockey leagues.

Where is your favorite place to be?
First choice - Home or traveling to interesting i.e. Italy.

How do you drink your coffee?
Hot coffee with milk.

What do you love most about serving patients?
I like and hope that I can contribute, a part of their healthcare, that gives them a positive experience toward their treatment and/or their recovery. I welcome their healthcare questions that I add additional value toward decisions that they are contemplating.  In short, I truly enjoy that I can be part of helping people.

What was your first job?
Believe it or not, Las Colinas Pharmacy in 1985.  I went to college to be a teacher but realized my senior year that teaching would not be for me.

Why did you decide to get into compounding pharmacy?
Jim saw the direction of pharmacy in the late 80's.  We were compounding before all the fancy equipment that is now available.  We would pack capsules by hand and weigh each one individually. To this day I avoid the Cap Lab.

What are your hobbies?
Traveling with my husband, family or friends. I am a sucker for a pretty beach.  I love home decorating, Spending time with my 2 Corgis (I have become a crazy corgi lady).  I showed Quarter Horses competitively for 30 years until a non-related back injury ended that.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I love working in my yard.

What is something that we would be surprised to know about you?
My husband and I own a Healthy Meal Prep company/kitchen.  We started meal prepping for ourselves while training for Ironman.  Other people found out what we were doing and wanted to eat healthy as well.  I run our commercial kitchen like a sterile clean room.  Yes, I am that OCD Person.

Where is your favorite place to be?
HOME.

How do you drink your coffee?
I am truly a coffee snob... I only like White Chocolate Mocha from Starbucks!

What do you love most about serving patients?
I love serving our patients because we can have such an impact on each of their lives.  We have an opportunity to do more than fill prescriptions and send them on their way.  We can educate them on various disease states, i.e. Metabolic syndrome.  We can help them balance their hormones, walk them through a purification program/detox.  I love building these relationships with patients and providers.  It is rewarding when a parent thanks you for helping their child who has a terminal condition, yet she was able to spend more time with her child because of a simple sterile compound.  As a crazy animal lover, knowing that I am helping someone else enjoy their fur-baby is a happy feeling.  I feel like those that are working in the compounding pharmacy setting become less selfless and more caring of others.
