During this week's regular meeting, the Key West City Commission recognized the service of the armed forces by proclaiming March 29
th as National Vietnam War Veterans' Day. The commemoration also salutes the contributions by American citizens and highlights the technology, science, and medical advances made during the war.
"We, as a grateful city," reads the proclamation, "recognized the 36 local individual names etched on our Vietnam Killed in Action Monument at Bayview Park."
In addition, the commission and the community thank and honor the more than 400 Key West men and women who proudly served, and whose names are etched on the Vietnam Living Memorial.
"We hereby pledge to bring home the 52 Floridian service members still missing in action," reads the proclamation.
Throughout the Vietnam War, 9 million people served our country, more than 58,000 gave their lives, 304,000 were wounded and 1,600 are missing in action.

Pt. 7 "Visions of Cuba"
OPENED TO A PACKED CROWD  AT FLORIDA KEYS COUNCIL OF THE ARTS BUILDING (GATO CUBAN CIGAR FACTORY) 1100 SIMONTON ST.  Curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts encourages all to attend the ongoing show: "Visions of Cuba", an exhibition of contemporary Cuban Art, curated by Alaen Ledesma Fernandez. This collective exhibition represents the artwork of more than 50 prominent Cuban artists who now live in cities throughout the world.

This presents a unique opportunity for both the artists and the audience, in that the Gato Building itself is steeped in Cuban Heritage. Jose Marti gave a historic presentation during his first visit to Key West in 1891, and the building was originally a Cuban Cigar Factory. "Visions of Cuba" showcases a variety of community artists, ranging from students to professionals, and promotes the significant cultural connection between Cuba, Key West, the Gato and Artists.

The exhibit is part of the Arts Council's Art in Public Buildings program, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and enhance the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building. The show will continue through April 26th, and the Gato Building is open daily, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 p.m. daily.

This exhibit was sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters. Additional support comes from donations by show visitors. For more information, please call the Arts Council at 305-295-4369 or email  info@keysarts.com

Successful Clean Up at Boca Chica Beach

Thank you to the 37 volunteers that helped Reef Relief clean up Boca Chica Beach last weekend. We picked up over 730 lbs of marine debris in less than two hours!

A majority of the trash we found were small plastics such as bottle caps, straws, cigarette butts, and cutlery. We would not be able to clean up our near shore waters without the help of our dedicated volunteers.

If you are interested in participating in any future clean up events, please contact us at  reefrelief@gmail.com or call us at 305-294-3100.

Sheriff's Office receives 16th consecutive perfect financial audit

Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay is pleased to announce the Sheriff's Office has received its 16th consecutive perfect audit.

A perfect audit means financial auditors did not find any irregularities, questionable spending or anything out of the norm for an accredited law enforcement agency. The audit is performed every year by independent auditors with no ties to the Sheriff's Office to ensure public trust between the agency and taxpayers.

"I am happy to report our latest perfect audit, but frankly, I'm not surprised," said Sheriff Ramsay. "Everyone in the Sheriff's Office Finance Division knows how important transparency is to me and this agency. Every year, I expect excellence and they never cease to deliver. And though I'm not surprised, I remain grateful for their continued efforts every year. I have made it clear to everyone in the agency that transparency is of the utmost importance in terms of keeping the public trust and that means financial transparency as well."

The Sheriff's Office is Triple Crown Award winner regarding its accreditation status. The Triple Crown Award is given to Sheriff's Offices which achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Correctional Association, The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Financial excellence is required in keeping such accreditation status.

Mystery Fest Key West Announces 2019 Whodunit Mystery Writing Competition-Entry Deadline is April 15

Key West, Florida Keys -- Do you have a finished, but unpublished, mystery genre manuscript? Mystery Fest Key West has announced a call for entries for the 2019 Whodunit Mystery Writing Competition. The winner will claim a book-publishing contract with Absolutely Amazing eBooks, free Mystery Fest Key West 2019 registration, airfare, hotel accommodations for two nights and a Whodunit Award trophy to be presented at the 6th Annual Mystery Fest Key West, set for June 28-30 in Key West, Florida.

Sponsored by Absolutely Amazing eBooks, candidates wishing to compete are invited to submit the first three pages (maximum 750 words) of a finished, but unpublished manuscript to whodunitaward@mysteryfestkeywest.com
no later than April 15, 2019. There is no fee to enter, finalists will be notified by May 1, and will have until May 10 to submit full manuscripts.

"Why just the first three pages? That criterion is a nod to late author Jeremiah Healy, a terrific mystery writer and great judge of mysteries," said Fest co-founder Shirrel Rhoades. "Healy often said a book either captures a reader in the first three pages...or it doesn't. The competition judges agreed with that assessment, and decided to use it as a yardstick for the competition."

Contest judges for 2019 are Dr. Toby Armour, whose credits include the murder mystery book "Blood Tells" and play, "Is This 24 Lily Pond Lane?"; Carol Lazar, an author, columnist, photojournalist and former senior editor for South Africa's Independent Newspapers; Captain Reef Perkins, author of "Sex, Salvage and Secrets," Screwed, Blu'd and Tattooed," and the mystery novel "Deep Air"; Robin Robinson, an author, syndicated newspaper columnist, educator and horticulturist; and Rhoades, an author, film critic, media consultant and publisher of Absolutely Amazing eBooks.

The 2019 Mystery Fest Key West, featuring Keynote Speaker Jeffery Deaver by popular demand, will include multiple presentations, panel discussions and social events at landmark Key West locations where attendees mingle with acclaimed mystery, crime fiction and true crime writers.

Whodunit Writing Competition guidelines and submission details, complete schedule of Mystery Fest Key West events and a Fest registration form are all available at   WWW.MYSTERYFESTKEYWEST.COM

Trombone Concert April 1 at the Little Room Jazz Club

The Isle of Bones 'Bones is back for its 12 th annual trombone concert. Highlighting three tenor trombones, the group will perform at the Little Room Jazz Club, 821 Duval Street, on Monday, April 1, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Featuring Joe Dallas, Jr., his father Joe Dallas, Sr., and Harry Schroeder on tenor trombones, the bass trombone slot will be filled by Georges Hemund on baritone sax, which adds a fine soloist to the group. The rhythm section is Mike Emerson, guitar, Gary Rivenson, bass, and Skipper Kripitz, drums.
Most of the musicians are regular players with the Paradise Big Band, which sponsors the concert. Joe Sr. is a regular visitor as trombone soloist.
Trombone quartets go back many years, to Beethoven and beyond. They became popular in the Fifties and Sixties, when the great jazz trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding put several such groups together. For this concert, all the charts were written by Schroeder for the group; most of them have never been heard before. "There's a great advantage to writing for people you know, whose playing you're familiar with," he says. "That way you can write to their strengths." The selections include up-tempo swing, Latin rock, blues, an original, and some standards. A feature of the concert will be a tribute to Hurricane Irma.
Since its inception more than a dozen years ago, this Isle of Bones 'Bones concert has become a local favorite for jazz fans.

New works by six award-winning artists spanning decades working in Santa Fe will be featured at Gildea Contemporary Gallery.  Contemporary paintings by Javier Lopez Barbosa, Suzanne Betz, Mark White, Suzanne Donazetti, Mark Horst, and Nancy Ortenstone, will be celebrated at a public opening on Monday, March 18th from 6 to 8 p.m. with a show titled "SANTE FE SIX" and remain on view through April 1. A self-taught artist, Barbosa's process of abstraction stems from the connection between his emotions and the blank canvas, creating works to elicit joy and happiness. As an equestrian turned painter, Betz's connection with horses is channeled into her luminous paintings. Donazetti communicates with color through the refractive lens of weaving and painting, representing sunlight and shadows on copper. For Horst, painting is a way of breaking time's grip and setting loose something wild and strong. First a clay artist, after earning his PHD in Theology from Yale University, Horst turned to painting as a practice, not unlike prayer, of paying attention to the world and its contours. Dreams and intuitive logic inform every area of Ortenstone's fresh impressionistic canvases, and White's ethereal landscapes engraved on aluminum, capture the intensity and rich palette of the Southwest. "Each artist has been delicately selected to represent the best of the best of the leading painters working in Santa Fe today. We are excited to share their new works with the seasoned traveler and sophisticated collector of Key West," states Paul Gildea, owner of the prestigious gallery, now in its fifth year in Old Town. Gildea Contemporary Gallery specializes in abstract and contemporary art by over 30 artists. Visit our online store at artsy.net/gildea-gallery. Gildea Contemporary Gallery is located at 522 Southard Street in Old Town, Key West, 305-797-6485 and Is open daily in season.

Underwater: Two One-Act plays by Tennessee Williams

Two performances: March 31 and April 1, 7:30pm
Directed by Stephen Kitsakos
Continuing to present lesser known works by the great American playwright, Key West Art & Historical Society presents the rarely performed comedy Lifeboat Drill and steamy threesome Kingdom of Earth - two intriguing plays with characters trapped, both physically and metaphorically, by rising waters. Starring Alaina Albertson, Michael Catlege, Kitty Clements, Arthur Crocker and Jeffrey Johnson.
Lifeboat Drill , penned in 1979 and published in 1981, was one of the last plays to premiere in Williams's lifetime. It concerns an elderly married couple, who occupy a stateroom on the Queen Elizabeth II crossing from Cherbourg to New York. Unhappily married, they bicker fiercely and when they discover that they have been deliberately prevented from attending a lifeboat drill by two mischievous stewards, decide to rehearse their own "drill" all by themselves. Mayhem and personal turbulence ensure. It is a "short, grotesque comedy that explores the panic, isolation, sense of abandonment and confusion that accompany old age." Set adrift in their stateroom, their marriage becomes a metaphor of the disaster of a sinking ship.
The Kingdom of Earth is a one-act play that was published in Esquire Magazine in 1967 and based on a short story Williams wrote in 1942. It bears an ominous epigraph from the Old Testament concerning the Great Flood. It tells the story of a strapping young man named Chicken, living in a Mississippi Delta farmhouse, and preparing for a flood from the rising river when he is unexpectedly visited by his sickly half-brother, Lot, and his newlywed of one-day, Myrtle, a woman whose sexual desire and personal fulfillment force her to make a choice about survival as flood waters approach as the three characters are forced to evacuate. The play was eventually expanded into a full-length play and opened on Broadway in 1968 at The Seven Descents of Myrtle .
Kitty Clements & Jeff Johnson Starring in Kingdom of Earth
Both The Kingdom of Earth and Lifeboat Drill encounter their themes in the idea of the unexpected rising of water: not only what lies beneath, but also what lies ahead.  The performances will be staged at The Studios of Key West , 533 Eaton Street, Key West, FL 33040

Presented in part by the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, Florida Keys Council of the Arts, Neal Ruchman & Melissa Jean McDaniel, and Bert Whitt.

Fringe Theater presents the quirky comedy
The Clean House, March 20 - 30, in the Parish Hall of St Paul's Episcopal Church.

The Pulitzer Prize nominated play, written by contemporary American playwright Sara Ruhl, takes place in "metaphysical Connecticut." It is a concoction of real and surreal story lines that take the audience on a fantastical journey that searches for meaning among life's messier moments.
Lane, an accomplished physician, wants her house clean. Lane's Brazilian maid wants to write jokes. Lane's surgeon husband wants to live happily-ever-after with his dying patient. Lane's sister Virginia wants to clean up all the mess everyone is making, if only they would let her!
"It's hard to put  The Clean House  tidily into a genre," says the show's director, Rebecca Tomlinson. "It's an unexpected mix of realism and fantasy, minimalism and spectacle."
The ensemble of diverse and whacky characters drives the play's action which stops periodically to allow the characters to say things directly to the audience. The play twists and turns through betrayal, loss, illness, and death yet manages to tell an unexpectedly life-affirming and funny story. It is, after all, laughter that sustains us through the muck, mire, and mess of our lives.
The  New York Times  called the NYC premiere of the play "visionary, tinged with fantasy, extravagant in feeling, and maybe a little nuts."
"I was drawn to the play's journey toward forgiveness," Rebecca shares.  "It resonated with me. I think it will resonate with the audience, too."
The cast features Wende Shoer as Lane, Diane May as her sister, Francesca Silva as the maid, Tim Dahms as Lane's husband, and Camille Toler as his soulmate.
The Clean House  runs March 20 - 30 at 7pm in the Parish Hall of St Paul's Episcopal Church, which is located at 401 Duval Street. (The Parish Hall sits at the back of the property.) Tickets are $35 general admission and $45 reserved seating. Seating is limited. Tickets are available online at www.fringetheater.orgor by calling 305-731-0581.

CONNECTIONS PROJECT
As well as being connected by the iconic Overseas Highway, the 125-mile-long Florida Keys island chain also is connected by a vibrant community of artists. From now through May 3, art lovers can view a travelling 24-foot mural featuring the work of close to 400 creative spirits during a series of exhibitions throughout the Keys. "The Connections Project: A Mosaic of the Keys" comprises nearly 400 individual canvases measuring 6 inches square that were provided to artists and arts-minded residents.
Their resultant works - produced in mediums ranging from oils and watercolor to photography, mixed media and quilting - showcase subjects including birds and sea life, palms and waterfront scenes, abstract visions and local landmarks.
"The mural's 'road show' tour from Key Largo to Key West celebrates the longstanding connections between the communities of the Keys," said Elizabeth Young, executive director of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, which spearheaded the project.

Art lovers can make a $50 donation for one individual canvas or a $125 donation for three at any reception or online at  keysarts.com . Each donor will receive a randomly selected, unique piece of the mosaic by mail with an artist statement sharing their inspiration. Proceeds from the Connections Project benefit local artists and arts organizations through arts council grants. Florida Keys Community College continues its VIP Series with "Aquaculture for the Home Aquarium, From Collector to Cultivator."  The presentation, led by Travis Knorr, Aquaculture and Renewable Energy Lab Technician at FKCC, is on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. in the Tennessee Williams Theatre on the Key West Campus.

Knorr will discuss the history of aquarium-keeping and the role aquaculture has on the sustainability of the trade.  Aquariums come in all shapes and sizes, but have one thing in common: the fish have to come from somewhere.  For decades, aquarium fish have been collected from the wild, in some instances using destructive fishing practices.  For many reasons the aquarium fish trade has been considered a destructive commodity.  While aquaculture as a whole has had some blunders through history, farming fish can and should be done sustainably.  Knorr will talk about the numerous ways to accomplish this and the many reasons it should be done-for aquariums as well as the seafood industry.

Once a fish collector, Knorr is now dedicated to cultivating sustainably-raised fish.  As FKCC's Lab Technician, he oversees the College's Aquaculture Lab and works with students in the College's Tropical Ornamental Mariculture Technician (TOMT) program to maintain the health and safety of hundreds of fish raised on campus.  Knorr is an alumnus of FKCC with TOMT and Research Diving certificates.  He is also the owner of Summerland Ocean Life, a home-based ornamental aquaculture company.

The acronym in FKCC' s VIP Series stands for " visions, ideas, and perspectives;"  the series invites the community to learn from speakers of local, regional, and national prominence.  Tickets are $5 at the door.  Admission is free for students at FKCC and Monroe County schools. For more information, call FKCC at 305-296-9081 or visit www.fkcc.edu.

By Alyson Crean

A fugitive wanted in Massachusetts on two counts of sexual assault on a disabled person was arrested in Key West thanks, in part, to state-of-the-art technology.
Two officers last week were conducting a search for illegal campers in the area of Government Road when they encountered a man sitting in a campsite outside of a tent and surrounded with cooking and camping gear. The officers explained that camping within city limits is illegal. During a discussion of where the man was from, officers asked him if he had any weapons. He turned over a knife from his pocket. However, they also spotted a large machete partially hidden in a backpack.
The man told the officers he was a military veteran named Roger Williams from Hawaii, and gave them a false social security number. Because the officers were concerned that there was no record of the man's identity through any driver's license and because he had a concealed weapon, they radioed for another officer to come to the scene with a fingerprint scanner.
The rapid ID system identified the man as 51-year old Donald D. Myotte with a Massachusetts driver's license. At this point Myotte dug a hidden driver's license from the bottom of his pack.
When his information was run, it turned out that Myotte has an active felony fugitive warrant out of Haverhill, Massachusetts for two counts of sexual assault on a disabled person.
When the officers attempted to handcuff Myotte, he fought them and was eventually tasered.
In addition to the out-of-state felony charges, Myotte was charged with illegal camping, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office provided the Rapid ID scanners to the Department.
"Thanks to our partnership with the MCSO, we are able to more quickly identify suspects," said Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg, "even when they try to conceal their identity. It's a great opportunity to work together to ensure a safer community."
