Join the Transylvania Natural Resource Council for our monthly public meeting

 This month the TNRC will receive a presentation from Allen McNiel- the Transylvania County interim Planning Director. In 2019, the Transylvania County Board of Commissioners appointed five citizens to the Cedar Mountain Small Area Planning Committee. The committee is in the process of developing a small area plan for the Cedar Mountain community and will then make recommendations to the Planning Board and Board of Commissioners on regulations, the development process, and other county activities that influence growth and development under the plan. On September 11th, Interim Planning Director Allen McNeill will share recent survey results with TNRC members concerning development activities and natural resources within Cedar Mountain.

Home Food Preservation Demonstrations 
 
Are you interested in preserving some of the summer's bounty to enjoy this winter, but really do not know where to begin?  Or perhaps you would like a refresher on the the most current methods?  The you should join our Family Consumer Science Agent, Renay Knapp at some or all of the demonstrations below.

There is a $15 materials fee per workshop.

Due to social distancing measures, we will be limiting in-person class size, but we will also offer the programs via ZOOM

Freezing and Drying Demonstration
September 1, 2-4 pm

Tomato and Salsa Class
September 3, at 2-4 pm 

Canning Meat Demonstration 
September 10, 2-4 p.m. 6-7:30 p.m. 

Making and Canning Apple Butter 
October 15, 6-8 p.m. or October 16, noon-1:30 p.m. 

Food Preservation by Fermentation 
October 23, 2 p.m.

If you plan to use your dial gauge pressure canner this season, don't forget to have the dial tested.  Contact Renay Knapp, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent, to arrange a time to drop it off for testing.  Call her at 828/884-3109 or email her at renay_knapp@ncsu.edu.
WNC AgOptions Grant Cycle is open for all small farmers!

WNC Agricultural Options is now accepting grant applications from farmers diversifying or expanding their businesses. With funding from the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, WNC AgOptions is distributing a total of $216,000 to western North Carolina farmers in 2021. The application deadline is Nov. 20.

Coronavirus Food Assistance Program

Are you a farmer or rancher whose operation has been directly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic? The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program provides direct relief to producers who faced price declines and additional marketing costs due to COVID-19.
USDA is accepting applications now through SEPTEMBER 11, 2020. Producers should apply through the Farm Service Agency at their local USDA Service Center.  For more information click here.

Who MeatSuite is for?  MeatSuite is for NC farms that raise meat and sell it, in bulk quantities, directly to consumers.
What counts as "bulk"? Traditionally, bulk sales are whole, half, and quarter animals however, bulk bundles are also a great way to sell. Bundles are an assortment of cuts. You can create bundles in a range of sizes, allowing consumers to fit their budget and their freezer.
What does it cost? It's FREE. NC Choices, a program of NC State Extension, manages MeatSuite and there is no cost to farmers or consumers using the site.
