Professional Liability Mock Mediation

On January 18, nearly 50 people participated in a half-day professional development event hosted by SEAMASS at the Kostas Research Institute in Burlington, MA. Three industry experts staged a realistic Professional Liability Mock Mediation, including Neil Hartzell, Esq., of LeClair Ryan, and Jay S. Gregory, Esq., Partner with Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani, LLP serving as Attorneys, and Hon. Nancy Holtz serving as Mediator. Role-players for either side of the mediation were SEAMASS members Doug Antholz, PE (McNamara Salvia); Lisa Davey, PE (Thornton Tomasetti); Joe Zona, PE (Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger); and Jeffrey Struble, PE (Struble Engineering, LLC). Attendees earned 4.0 PDH credits.

SEAMASS at the 2017 Structural Engineering Summit

SEAMASS was well-represented at the 2017 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit, held from Oct 11-14 in Washington, DC. The event drew a record 500+ attendees from across the country, and featured education sessions for practicing structural engineers, social and networking events, and a trade show with 59 exhibitors.
The McNamara Salvia Team was awarded an NCSEA Project Award for their project, The Exchange at 100 Federal Street, in Boston, MA. (See the Project Spotlight section of this newsletter for details.)

Leaders of several Massachusetts professional organizations, including SEAMASS, AIA/BSA, BSCES, and MEAER have been meeting monthly to continue the positive accomplishments and hard work of MEAER in finalizing the formation of the Massachusetts Emergency Response program. Now that Massachusetts has adopted a Good Samaritan Law, the next steps will be to engage with either the BSCES or AIA in solidifying the required legal and backup documentation. Additionally, the group is discussing the formation of a Memorandum of Understanding, so that the legalities of Civil Liability Insurance and Workers Compensation coverage may be worked out. Currently, the group is reviewing several samples of Memorandums, while working out the logistics of the legal backing through BSCES. Stay tuned for more updates in future issues of SEAMASS News.

SEAMASS congratulates the McNamara Salvia Team on their innovation and success with this NCSEA Award-winning project. Jonathan Bayreuther, PE served as Senior Project Manager, and Kevin Ducharme, PE served as Design Engineer. Jon credits his McNamara Salvia colleague Rob Kane, PE for encouraging submission of this project for an NCSEA Award.
The 100 Federal Street Pavilion, officially called
The Exchange at 100 Federal Street, is a space-frame constructed in solid plate steel with shop-welded, field bolted exposed connections. The structure is coordinated to match the 5ft x 15ft glazing unit, and eliminates the need for deep curtainwall mullions while providing dynamic interest both inside and out. The angular shape rises from 35 ft tall to 50 ft at the prow and clear-spans 80ft at the widest point. Primary structural analysis was performed with custom shapes and wind-tunnel tested load combinations in RAM Structural System and RAM Elements.
The Exchange will be open for access to the lobby of 100 Federal Street, owned by Boston Properties, in the winter of 2018, and tenant fit-outs will be completed in the Summer of 2018. Perkins + Will served as Architects for the project, and Cives was the steel fabricator.

Meet Brian Post, PE
|
Brian Post, PE
is a Structural Engineer with Thornton Tomasetti in Boston. He earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and M.S. degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in structures from Johns Hopkins University. A Massachusetts native, he spent two years in Atlanta, GA working in cold-formed steel design before returning to accept a position at Weidlinger Associates, which merged with Thornton Tomasetti in 2015.
Brian currently serves as Records Keeper for the SEAMASS Young Members Group (YMG), and will become the Programs Committee Chair for the 2018-19 fiscal year beginning in June. He recently began serving as corresponding member of the NCSEA Existing Buildings Committee, which is chaired by fellow SEAMASS member Michael Fillion, PE. Congratulations to Brian on recently earning his PE license.
He has answered the questions below, so we may know him better. Thank you, Brian, for your contributions to SEAMASS and the industry!
Q: Why did you join SEAMASS?
A: I joined SEAMASS because of the opportunities for networking and camaraderie with other engineers in the Boston area. From attending seminars and site visits to gaining insight on becoming licensed, SEAMASS has been a huge benefit to my professional development. I am excited about our upcoming YMG outreach events with local colleges and universities to continue to encourage growth in the industry.
Q: What are your goals as an engineer?
A: My goals are to gain as much experience as possible and eventually find a niche. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. I also want to expand my knowledge of BIM as I see huge potential for its evolving role in the building industry.
Q: Please describe a project that you're involved with.
A: I have been involved with a U.S. Embassy project in a confidential location, requiring a comprehensive analysis of an existing reinforced concrete office building undergoing renovations with a new addition. Located in a high seismic region, its lateral force-resisting system consists of special reinforced concrete shear walls. I used ETABS to perform a response spectrum analysis and checked all new and existing structural elements for code compliance. Due to the modifications to the structure, many of the shear walls required extensive repair details or strengthening with fiber-reinforced polymer.
Q: How do you spend your free time?
A: In my free time, I enjoy traveling. I have been to several European countries and would like to see many other parts of the world. I also enjoy reading, participating in church activities, going to the gym, and rooting for the Boston sports teams.

This webinar will focus on scholarship programs of various SEAs, how they were started, who they benefit and how these SEAs plan to increase their efforts going forward. Post-Disaster Building Safety Assessment Training

PRESENTER: Scott Nacheman, PE, co-chair of NCSEA's Structural Engineering Emergency Response Committee (SEER), assisted by one or two local Cal-OES trainers.
OVERVIEW (further details forthcoming): This full-day session will focus on how to conduct post-disaster structural evaluations for use by state and local emergency management agencies. It will follow California's Office of Emergency Services (Cal-OES) training procedures, and will qualify attendees as Cal-OES structural evaluators. This session will be of particular interest to structural engineers, architects, and local building officials.
This training is an update to the Post-Disaster Safety-Assessment Program (SAP) Evaluator Training presented in September 2013 by the Massachusetts Engineers & Architects Emergency Response Committee in collaboration with MA Task Force-1, SEAMASS and SEI Boston Chapter.
