Heroes of the Week

Allison Skelly

Congratulations to this week's Heroes Pax and Allison. We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.

A Note to Pax Pulido, Technical Arts Director:
Pax: What can't Pax do? Seriously this guy is uber talented, funny, patient and kind. I have been blessed to work near him this school year and it has been so fun to see him teach. He connects things I would never connect with biblical principles, he makes his class environment and lessons completely engaging. Beyond dedicated, he often is the first one here everyday and the last one to leave. This guy is the glue that holds all chapels together and we are so blessed to have him here at MCS. I see students who are often shy and once they learn more about Cinematic arts they blossom in confidence. MCS is beyond blessed to have such an amazing and devoted teacher.

Pax: Where to start? Servant, multi-talented, willing spirit, and creative visionary. He has built a tech arts program from scratch because of his heart for students and passion for the arts. He pours into the lives of students and is a Godly example. He provides an avenue for students to belong and thrive in unique ways. And they love him! He makes chapels and videos happen. He is always willing to make Heather's crazy video ideas a reality but also serves the entire school with his gifts of video creation (hours of work). Spiritual Emphasis Week he was a rock star! It couldn't have happened without him! He is always behind the scenes, never seeking credit or acknowledgment. Well, we're going to change that! Pax, you deserve recognition! You are a hero to the students, to the school, to us!

Allison Skelly, Second Grade Teacher:
Allison, Thank you so much for your help with my report cards! The Friday before they were due, I was stressed out and you noticed and took the time to help out. I truly appreciate it. Sammy

Stories MCS Stories
TK-K Chapel
In our TK-K Chapel program, students are learning about each Fruit of the Spirit. Our teachers lay a beautiful beginning foundation that is built on during the rest of their time at MCS.

Since the word "love" is used for everything from chocolate cake to God, Mrs. Lynch presented the Fruit of the Spirit "Love" by reading the book, Ten Things I Love About You by Daniel Kirk, and sharing some special videos that helped understand the importance of doing things with love from God's perspective. I Cor. 13:1 reminds us that doing things without love is like being a noisy, clanging cymbal.

Our students worshipped with a great song from our MCS friend and Alumni Mom, Jana Alayra:
It's About L-O-V-E - Love!

Elementary Chapel

New building, new songs, new language!

Worship in Spanish
Click for Worship in Spanish video
Mr. Lucas and the worship band presented two new songs. The students heard about the meaning of the lyrics to "Reckless Love" by Cory Asbury, and worshipped with rhythm and chopsticks to "Build Your Kingdom" by Rend Collective.

The 1st-3rd graders also worshipped in Spanish with the help of Senorita Pena. The students were then given an opportunity to write a question about our new building to submit to Mr. Moore, and to join in prayer for the construction process to bring glory to God and His Kingdom.

Family question: What does a lost sheep have to do with "reckless" love?

In chapel last Monday, it was an honor to recognize both current students as well as a special alumni for significant achievements.

Current students were awarded with the quarterly Lion Pride Award. This award is given to students who consistently reflect Christ-like character. In 6th grade, students are awarded for exhibiting respect, in 7th grade, the beatitudes, and in 8th grade, leadership.

In addition to awarding these well deserving students, our very own alumni and 2018 winter Olympian for the bob sled, Carlo Valdes, was presented with the first ever "Distinguished Alumni of the Year" award. This new award will be presented annually in recognition of an MCS Alumni whose accomplishments, affiliations, and/or career has brought honor to the MCS legacy within the community. We were thrilled to present this award to Carlo Valdes who was selected for the determination, courage, and tenacity he demonstrated in his Olympic pursuits.

Middle School Share2Wear April 24th
This month's Share2Wear benefits 2 things we love dearly: our Alumni and Shalimar!

MCS Alum Joey McGuinness is in the process of carrying out his Eagle Scout Project for MIKA, an organization that operates out of Shalimar! There is a surf ministry in place for the Shalimar kids, but it currently is very challenging to operate and is therefore limiting how often this ministry can be put into action. Joey saw that need for a permanent structure next to the beach to store the surfboards and many supplies to allow this ministry to take place. Joey then developed a plan and has raised $5,500 toward the construction of this storage, but still needs $500 to complete the assembly. We will proudly come alongside him and help him serve our friends at Shalimar.

This month we will SHARE 1 or more dollars to help Joey complete this storage for MIKA's Surf Ministry at Shalimar.

For the WEAR portion, students will participate in Twin/Group Match Day with groups of 2, 3, or 4 people in their homerooms.

Students are encouraged to get creative while matching their partners in at least 3 different ways (shirt color, pants, shoe color, hair style, accessories, theme, etc.).  Students have been notified of this dress day via student Schoology. All school dress code guidelines apply.

We are looking forward to helping Joey, those who serve at MIKA, and our friends at Shalimar, all while having fun on our campus!

Information about MIKA Christian Surf Club:

Over the past 13 years, Surf Club has brought people from all walks of life together due to some common interests: a love of surfing and Jesus. Each Surf Club, a local pastor or leader starts off our day with a devotion. Surf instructor's provide one on one, or small group surf lessons. Soccer games begin on the beach, as beach patrollers keep a watchful eye, and small groups or individuals provide lunch and refreshments. It's an incredibly exciting and exhausting day at the same time, and some beautiful, unlikely relationships are built! For more info or to volunteer visit www.mikacdc.org/mika-christian-surf-club/

May 11th is a half day of school for middle school but they are not involved in elementary Grandparents/Special Friend day. As much as possible, early check-outs of middle school students should be avoided. In the event that a middle school student will be checked out by your elementary student's guests, they will need to be checked out at the front office downstairs. If a middle school student will be checked out early, it would be helpful and appreciated to pre-arrange the early dismissal by contacting Robin Walker in the middle school office at [email protected].  When emailing, please include the student name as well as the name of the adult that will be checking the student out. All middle school students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. and will walk through carpool in the field area as usual. Cars will be dismissed at 12:40 p.m.
