San Francisco Giants -- Spring Training Report
The San Francisco Giants concluded their final week of Spring Training last week, adding four wins, two losses, and a tie in a mix of split-squad games to bring their overall Cactus League record to 13-14. The week involved a slew of roster adjustments for the Giants, who were focused on building their team this spring and face difficult Opening Day decisions.
Outfielder Steven Duggar, who saw his 2018 rookie season cut short due to a shoulder injury, has solidified his position on the Giants' roster. In 13 Cactus League games Duggar batted .341 in
41 plate appearances and contributed strong defensive play throughout the spring. Duggar will start at center field on Opening Day.
Giants LHP Travis Bergen allowed zero earned runs in seven innings of Cactus League work and is making a case for a spot in the Giants' bullpen. He is battling RHP Trevor Gott, who has also allowed zero runs on nine and 2/3rds innings pitched in Spring Training. Whether both pitchers make the Giants roster is uncertain and manager Bruce Bochy commented that roster positions would be clearer after the three-game Bay Bridge Series.
The Series began on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum with the Giants suffering a 5-0 loss. The Series continues through Tuesday at Oracle Park and the Giants open the regular season in San Diego on Thursday, at 1:10 p.m., with a four-game series against the Padres.

Oakland A's -- Regular Season and Spring Training Report
The Athletics had several days of travel and recovery last week after opening the 2019 MLB season in Tokyo, Japan against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday. Although the Athletics lost by a score of 9-7, they hit three homers: Stephen Piscotty with a solo shot in the first inning, 2018 home run leader Khris Davis with a two-run homer in the third, and Matt Chapman with a three-run homer in the seventh inning. But the A's were shut down by the Mariners' pitching squad after Chapman's home run and were handed their first loss.
On Thursday the Mariners and A's went into extra innings but the game again resulted in an A's loss. Khris Davis struck out with a chance to walk-off the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, and second-baseman Jurickson Profar overthrew a potential inning-ending out in the 12th to allow a go-ahead run which stood up for 5-4 Seattle win. This loss was overshadowed, however, by Ichiro's heartwarming final performance with the Mariners and a special post game retirement announcement from the legendary Japanese player.
Athletics first baseman and Gold Glover Matt Olson underwent a successful surgery on his right hand injured in Thursday's game. Olson, who played in all 162 regular season games for the A's last season, has not received an official return date, nor has the timeline for his recovery been made public. However, multiple sources suggest that A's fans should expect Olson out for at least a month, with Jurickson Profar and Mark Canha covering first base.
Returning to the Oakland Coliseum, the Athletics and the San Francisco Giants faced off in the first game of their annual Bay Bridge Series on Sunday, resulting in a 5-0 Oakland victory. The shutout win was backed by homers from starters Stephen Piscotty, Jurickson Profar, and Ramón Laureano. The Golden Bears (14-1 4-0 PAC)
ran in nine tries and kept the Wildcats out of the try zone until late in Saturday's PAC Rugby Conference clash on Witter Rugby Field as California's First XV defeated Arizona (5-2 2-1 PAC), 55-13. In the reserve-grade contest, the Rugby Bears defeated the 'Cats by the score of 75-0. Above,

March 9, 2019, Sheeran Field, Treasure Island, CA. A preseason match between two of the top Division 2 women's teams saw the SFGG Women defeat the San Jose Seahawk Women by a score of 36-17. The first half was played during a continuous rain, at times torrential, with slick field conditions and gusting winds. The sun came out for the second half, the winds abated, but the footing continued to be sloppy. The SFGG Women played a coherent game, led by top scorer, Michelle Maldonado. For the second consecutive year, Shell will welcome more than 1,000 students representing over 90 teams from high schools and universities across the Americas to Make the Future Live California featuring Shell Eco-marathon Americas at Sonoma Raceway on April 3-6.
Over its three-decade history, including the past 12 years in the Americas, the program has seen thousands of high school and university students from across the world build ultra-energy-efficient vehicles, in a variety of designs and energy types; all competing to see who can go the farthest using the least amount of energy.
Shell Eco-marathon is one of the world's leading energy efficiency competitions for students, requiring them to design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles; push the boundaries of what is technically possible and inspire thinking about the challenges and opportunities for mobility and transition to new energies. Student teams will compete on a.99-mile, five-turn course comprising the raceway's start/finish straight, iconic Esses and a hairpin turn at Turn 11.
Student teams have been working for months to design and build their ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. By maximizing elements such as streamlined design, lightweight materials and driving strategy, teams aim to set new fuel-efficiency records. Local entries include the University of California, Berkeley; California Polytechnic State University; and California State University, Sacramento.

Haze Mach won a coveted spot on the 2019 AAU/USA National, earning him SportStar of the Week accolades. Millions of kids train in karate every day in hopes of making this elite team of only 50 athletes. Mach trains at Tom Westernoff's Karate & Fitness USA in Lafayette.
