Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall!
October 2018 Hot Jobs

...I lost my job three times in the span of six years, all between Halloween and Thanksgiving. And ever since, I have been giving back to the world that kicked me in the gut for the last 14 years :)

Here is the harsh truth about October. It's a nice month. It has pumpkin, spice, costumes, weekends with apple picking and adventures in good weather, but if you are out of work, time is running out. I hate to be negative, especially since you all know me as a dream builder and dream chaser, but those titles are based on strong roots and reality. So unfortunately, if you haven't found something new by Halloween...your chances of finding something new dwindle until after January 15th.

Tis a season of people focusing on 4th quarter costs, both professionally and personally. Teams are zipping up and buttoning up. And, they may be taking time off and won't have time in the calendar to allocate to a new hire. You can't take all this personally - it's not you. In fact, if you take a breath, you can probably remember doing this to others unintentionally in other chapters of your story.

So what do you do? You don't give up. You take a hard look at freelance and get yourself out there for anything and everything that can get you working. This will keep you fresh and freelance is priceless for professionals in between jobs. I don't care what the hourly rate is - it's like a "rent the runway" for your career. You get a taste of things that are better and different, which is an improvement over sitting at home, applying to jobs while also trying to fit in some gym time. The hours don't balance when you aren't working. You can't get anything done. I know this and you know this! If you are freelancing, you can still interview for full time work - the same way you would if you were working. Take the interview before work, after work, at lunch - you never know, sometimes the mini adventure you took as a band aid could be an eye opening experience, and possibly, a new full time job...

And in the meantime, chin up and curb the PSL's...they are too pricey anyways. Hang in there, your new chapter is just around the bend!

XO, Marissa*
