HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF OFFERING
PRAY FOR TEXAS

Many people have been asking if we are going to have a food or clothing drive to help our suffering sisters and brothers in Texas.  We learned a valuable lesson from Hurricane Katrina that it is better to let the local support systems get in place and then monitor their needs for assistance.

Bishop Frank decided that from our vantage point in Connecticut, we would be well advised to pool our resources on a Diocesan level and send our monetary support to Catholic Charities who are already in place serving the those local communities.

So, we will be having a second collection next weekend for the benefit of the people of Texas.  We will provide envelopes in the bulletin for your convenience and we ask that you be as generous as your means allows.

"Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38'And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40"The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.' Matthew 25:37-40

HAPPY LABOR DAY

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - A

How many times have we missed the message of God? We assume we know God's will, or substitute our will for his. Our way might succeed or fail, but the cost is so much higher that God's way. We feel no peace. Our lives become increasingly dramatic. God's way means sacrifice, but it also means inner contentment, for God shows us our place in his plan.

In the first reading, Jeremiah got mad at God, but remained faithful to his work. This reading from the prophet proved the saying: "It's OK to get mad at God. It's not OK to give up on God.

Psalm 63was a morning prayer. It set the tone of the day for the believer who raised their mind and heart to God. This hymn reminds and encourages us to pray in the morning, so we can place God first in our lives each day.

In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul encouraged his audience to offer themselves up to God. In other words, actively seek God's will over our own, despite the pain involved. As St. Paul stated: "Seek the good, the pleasing (to God) and the complete."

Gospel of Matthew  - Who's in charge? The answer to that question can be as simple as whose "spin" on a subject becomes common wisdom. After he declared Jesus the Messiah, Peter challenged the notion Jesus had as the Christ. Peter's idea of God's Holy One did not include suffering and death. In response, Jesus had to reject and shame Peter to correct his vision.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine was born in Tagaste in modern Algeria on November 13, 354. He was brought up in a Christian atmosphere by his mother, St. Monica, whose feast we celebrated yesterday. Augustine went to Carthage to study. After a while, he left the practice of the Christian faith and spent many years in sinful living and in false beliefs. His mother Monica prayed daily for her son's conversion. In Milan, the marvelous sermons of St. Ambrose made their impact too.

Finally, Augustine became convinced that Christi-anity was the true religion. Yet he did not become a Christian then, because he thought he could never live a pure life. One day, however, he heard about two men who had suddenly been converted after reading the life of St. Anthony of Egypt, whose feast we celebrate on January 17. Augustine felt ashamed. "What are we doing?" he cried to one of his friends. "Unlearned people are taking heaven by force. Yet we, with all our knowledge, are so cowardly that we keep rolling around in the mud of our sins!"

Full of bitter sorrow, Augustine went into the garden and prayed, "How much longer, Lord? Why don't I put an end to my sinning now?" Just then he heard a child singing the words, "Take up and read!" Thinking that God intended this as a message for him, he picked up the Bible and opened it. His eyes fell on St. Paul's letter to the Romans, chapter 13, where Paul says to stop living immoral lives and to live in imitation of Jesus. It was just what Augustine needed. From then on, he began a new life.

He was baptized on Holy Saturday, 387. Four years later, he was ordained a priest. In 396, he was made bishop of Hippo when Bishop Valerius died. Augustine wrote many works to explain and defend the Catholic faith. Even today, his letters, sermons, and treatises are important to the study of theology and philosophy. On the wall of his room, he had the following sentence written in large letters: "Here we do not speak evil of anyone." St. Augustine defended the Church's teachings against errors, lived simply, and supported the poor. He preached very often and prayed with great fervor right up until his death. "Too late have I loved you," he once cried to God. But Augustine spent the rest of his life in loving God and leading others to love him, too.

Thinking over the lives of the saints, we should ask ourselves, "Can't we do what these men and women did?" We can become saints too, if we pray each day to know and do God's will.

ST JOSEPH RIGHT TO LIFE COMMITTEE
W E HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY A DONOR
(who wishes to remain anonymous)
WHO VERY GENEROUSLY UNDERWROTE THE FIRST TWO
MONTHS OF OUR NEW PROGRAM.
PLEASE PRAY FOR THIS PERSON
BECAUSE GOD KNOWS WHO SHE/HE IS ..

You are probably asking yourself what this familiar sign from Route 7 and 133 has to do with St Joseph Pro Life Committee .  Well, a few months ago the Pro-Life Committee thought we should begin to bring our pro-life message from the church to the community.
Let's face it, for the most part we are preaching to the choir when it comes to the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death... "Life" is God's greatest gift to the world and it needs to be protected and defended. I am sure we would not get too much resistance about that from our SJC faithful but spreading the message needs to be ubiquitous... (like Geico).

We believe that the community at large is not as informed or convinced of what we believe and why we believe it, so St Joseph Pro-Life Committee, under the leadership of chairperson Pat Tharrington, want to bring our message public and to do so using local bulletin boards.

Recently, we have gotten quite an education on the location bulletin boards and their monthly rental fees.  We looked in New Milford, Danbury, Brookfield and Newtown.  We seem to be able to get the best value for our investment right in our backyard from Dr Jenny Conner's office on Federal Road ... and the months of November and December are available.

The monthly rental is $1100 and the one time set up for the ad itself is $850 and it is reusable.  This is much more affordable then some of the others boards on more heavily travelled roads.  To fund this endeavor, we have begun a program called the weekly  Five $ for Life Envelope Campaign.

Beginning this week we will have gray envelopes in the pew holders requesting financial assistance for our Pro-Life Bulletin Board Campaign.  We are trying to raise enough $FIVE$ to fund the November/December bulletin boards to kick off this campaign. We will replenish these envelopes each week and give you a running count of where we are in our goal process.... once we make our goal, we will secure the current bulletin board contract and then go in search of another available board to target and for which to save.

St Rose of Lima in Newtown does a similar program however, they have an archangel that ensures financially that they have always have a Pro-Life message on Route 6 for the community to think about... If this is your passion and you have the where with all, please let us know.

In light of the above great news and because a parishioner who does an awful lot of business with LAMAR signs has stepped forward to help us with other signs locations and funding leverage, we will continue with our $FIVE$ for Life program to fund future bulletin boards with our messages for life.

Thank you for your support of this very worthy campaign!
