THE BIA IS ALL ABOUT GETTING IT DONE FOR OUR MEMBERS, BUT WE ALSO LIKE TO HAVE A BIT OF FUN
President and CEO, Michael Strech, guides you through a busy, but fun fall
By Michael Strech, President and CEO, North State BIA
At the North State BIA, much of our time is spent in the trenches, identifying the policy battles that need fighting in order to help foster a positive business climate in which the homebuilding industry can thrive. In that vein, our Government Affairs team, as well as the members of our PAC board, oftentimes find themselves shuttling from one hearing or fundraiser to the next one. However, like the title of this article implies, we also like to have fun in this association...all in the name of business development, of course.

That is why I wanted to briefly get you thinking about some of the exciting events we have coming up:
  • In just two days we are thrilled to be holding our fall Breakfast Blend event, focusing on "The Next Generation in Home Building," which will include a terrific discussion with some of the rising stars of our industry;
  • On September 12, we will hit the links for the BIA Pirate's Booty Fall Golf Tournament at the beautiful Winchester Country Club; and
  • Three days after the golf tournament, its time to get dressed up for MAME 42, our annual industry awards event.

This is just a sampling of what's happening at the BIA this fall. There are more events in the works, including headliners, like the Regional Housing Forecast, that we'll be contacting you about soon. I would like to strongly encourage you to consider attending a few of our upcoming events. Growing your business can only happen when you grow your network and that's what we are there to do for our members.

If you have any questions about our slate of events, please don't hesitate to contact me or Angela Tsukiji, not just because we're "in the know," but also because we pretty much go to everything!

Hope to see you at an upcoming BIA event!

Join the Fight Against AB 1701
AB 1701 is a severely flawed proposal that would drive up project costs and unfairly punish innocent homebuilding companies. According to our partners at CBIA, AB 1701: (1) f ails to hold unscrupulous contractors accountable for not paying their own employees and shifts liability to innocent parties that have already made payments meant for the workers of those contractors and (2) h urts people who are already struggling with affordability or living paycheck to paycheck by making housing more expensive. See how you can get involved in the fight against this bill here.

Lincoln CFD Latest
The City of Lincoln held a workshop in May and suggested the formation of a more expensive CFD that would affect the viability of projects. Several BIA members had concerns about the proposed costs, and the group met with city staff again last week to discuss our objections and an analysis by our consultant. The meeting was productive and a smaller group will meet again with city staff to work through the remaining issues.

Online Application Submittals and Electronic Plan Review Coming to Roseville This Fall
The City of Roseville is modernizing the process for the submittal, review, and approval of individual projects by accepting permit applications, payments, and electronic plans online. The online system is scheduled to be operational this fall. For updates from the City click here.

Placer County Sports and Event Center in Roseville
Placer County is seeking public input for the proposed Placer Sports and Event Center at the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville. A notice of preparation for the project is available for comment until September 8. To view the notice of preparation and to comment go here.

Sacramento Metropolitan Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy 2020 Update
SACOG has begun the process with their board to identify issues for eventual development of a policy framework to guide the 2020 MTP/SCS update. The MTP/SCS serves as the overarching planning document for transportation dollars in the region. SACOG is planning for this major update to cover everything from the region's affordable housing shortage to greenhouse gas emissions. BIA government affairs staff has developed and built relationships with new and continuing SACOG board members and will continue to stay engaged during this critical update.

OSY participant starts a new career, here's how you can help

As you know, our OSY program serves 18-24-year-old youth who have little or no job experience, with most having not completed high school, and several being young, often single, parents. One measure of success for our program is when we help our kids find work.

One of our youth has been offered a full-time position as a stair rail installation apprentice making a great wage and he couldn't be more excited to start his new career. He's a hard-working self-starter who will also be attending college part time while he works. Like many skilled trades his new job requires him to have some tools to get started.

Here's where you can help!  We need:

10-12" Sliding miter chop saw (with laser) & table
Two nail guns (1 1/4" finish 2")
Stand (saw horse) Jigsaw
200' power cord Table saw (mini) or skillsaw
Sanders (belt and orbital) Air compressor
Handheld router Sawzall

We're accepting donations of new or used items or financial support (including Home Depot or Lowes gift cards) to help us purchase the tools. All donations are tax deductible.

To help please contact Elizabeth Goldsmith.
