Connect with the California State PTA Health and Community Concerns Team on issues concerning your school, community and the state by joining the call.
Community concerns are those issues that impact our families and students in our communities and schools. Our children can't learn, grow and succeed in school if they're facing major challenges at home, in their neighborhoods and in their broader communities.
Community concerns include, but are not limited to:

Action for Healthy Kids
offers "Parents for Healthy Kids Grants" for the 2018-2019 school year.
In this webinar, you'll learn about specific "Parents for Healthy Kids Grants" details, and receive helpful tips for applying.
These grants are for parents or parent groups to implement physical activity and nutrition initiatives and to engage more parents in student and family health.
- Schools and school parent groups are welcome to apply.
- Grants up to $1,000 are available for K-12 schools.
- Applications due by Friday, April 6, 2018
- Schools with greater than 50% of students eligible for free/reduced-priced meals may receive priority, but all schools are encouraged to apply.

This year, our speaker will be Dianna MacDonald, President, California State PTA. She will be speaking on
"Effective Communication, Relationships, and PTA"
.
Developing relationships is an important part of the work that we do in PTA, in business and in our schools. With effective communication, we can create authentic relationships with our parents, administrators and community members.
Each year, parents, principals, superintendents, school board members and elected officials attend the Sixth District luncheon. This is an excellent opportunity to hear a wonderful speaker and to meet members of your community and other PTA leaders in Sixth District.

High School Students Apply to be on the
California State PTA Board of Managers
Application Deadline: Thursday, March 15
Students are valuable members of the California State PTA Board of Managers and they share their perspective on current issues, voice their concerns, and provide insight during the meetings they attend.
Volunteer service as a member on the CAPTA board provides students with an opportunity to further develop leadership skills within the framework and organizational structure of the California State PTA.
The student must be at least 16 years old and no more than 19 years old when the term begins on July 1.

Have a dress in your closet that you would like to donate, here are donation guidelines:
- Current styles from 2008 to present
- Dry-cleaned and on hangers
- Prom dresses, formal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, or fancy party dresses
- Short or long dresses accepted
- Appropriate for teenagers
- New and like-new accessories

Why is the Restaurant Asking Me for a W-9?
Many restaurants ask PTAs to complete IRS Form W-9 in order to schedule dinner night outs or receive payment.
Questions:
Is the W-9 form the same as the Letter of Determination (LOD) for Tax Exempt Status?
- No, the two forms have different purposes. With the W-9 you are confirming to the restaurant/business that this really is your PTA's EIN number.
- All companies (profit and non-profit) have an EIN, but an EIN doesn't mean that your PTA is a non-profit. The Letter of Determination (LOD) indicates that the PTA has a tax-exempt status and is a non-profit.
Can we just provide the LOD form?
- No. You will need to provide the business with the form they have requested.
If we do need to use the W-9, where do I get the form?
How to fill in the W9:
1. Name: PTA California Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students, Inc
2. DBA - Write in your unit PTA name as listed in your bylaws
3. Box - would be "Other"; write in "Association 501(c)(3)
4. Exemptions - there would not be any
5 and 6. Address - Use the school address
7. List account numbers (optional) - leave blank
8. Requester's name (optional) - This is who is asking for the form (ie restaurant name etc).
Part 1: Your PTA's EIN
Part 2: President or treasurer can sign the form. Format is the same as signing for a contract:
- "Name of PTA as on bylaws by: Name of officer, position"
- ex: "ABC Elementary PTA by: Jane Doe, President"

When's a Good Time to Do Your Bylaws?
How About Now
If you want to make change(s) for next year in
- your meeting dates for next year,
now is the time! These items are all in the bylaws.
Any changes to bylaws must be submitted to your council (units in councils) or to Sixth District (out-of-council units), then the bylaws go through channels to the CAPTA Parliamentarian. After CAPTA approves the changes, the bylaws are returned to be adopted by your unit.
This sequence takes time (two to three months) - so plan ahead and change your bylaws now!
