Pros and Cons of Three Popular Diets
from the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S.
The holiday season is over and many of us are heading into the new year with extra pounds to shed. This often results in making New Year's resolutions that include reducing calories and increasing physical activity.
However, choosing a diet or eating plan that fits can be daunting. Since there's no diet that fits everyone a weight-loss plan should reflect individual habits, lifestyle, personality, and health considerations. It should be a plan that's adaptable to work long term as well.
Here are some pros and cons of three popular diets.
Flexitarian diet
Created by Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, the Flexitarian diet is primarily a vegetarian diet with little to no meat or poultry. The "flexible" part means nothing is off limits, however, focus is placed on increasing consumption of plants while reducing meat and poultry intake.
Pros
- Diet is adaptable so works for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans.
- Plant-based foods are nutrition dense and usually low in calories which can encourage weight loss and maintenance.
- More plants in the diet can also be good for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Cons
- May be difficult for some to increase so many veggies and fruits.
- Reducing meat and chicken while learning about alternate sources of protein can be a challenge.
- Must buy the book to become a true flexitarian.
Paleo diet
Loren Cordain, Ph.D is credited with developing the Paleo diet. The premise is to eat like a caveman consuming a high-protein, high fiber diet with no refined foods. The diets focus is on lean meats, vegetables, fruits, eggs, nuts and seeds plus healthy oils like olive and coconut.
Pros
- Diet encourages little to no processed foods, drastically reducing consumption of additives and preservatives
- Weight loss may be easier to achieve without grains, dairy, and legumes in the diet.
- May experience more fullness due to the increase in protein and fats.
Cons
- May not be enough carbohydrates for health and energy
- Missing many important vitamins, nutrients, and fiber since entire food groups are removed from diet.
- Too much red meat is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.
Fast diet - 5:2 diet
This diet started in the U.K. promoted by Michael Mosley, MD and Mimi Spencer. The premise is to eat a normal diet for 5 days then drastically reduce calories for 2 days; 500 calories for women and 600 for men with at least one normal eating day between fasting days. Protein, vegetables, fruits, and lots of water are recommended when fasting. Any food is allowed during the 5-normal eating days.
Pros
- Studies have suggested intermittent fasting may improve our metabolic profile such as cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
- Can promote weight loss.
- Diet can be adjusted to accommodate vegetarians and vegans.
- There are no special foods to buy.
Cons
- This approach to weight loss is not recommended for diabetics, pregnant women, or those with a history of eating disorders.
- The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics does not recommend the diet for long term use.
- May cause dehydration, irritability, and disrupt sleep patterns.
- Scientific evidence supporting this as a viable weight loss program is limited

Do you travel often- for business or for pleasure? If you do, you know how important it is to maintain your healthy habits, especially when you are on the road. It can be tough to eat healthy while traveling and often getting an effective workout in each day can be nearly impossible, especially in those tiny hotel gyms!
The IHRSA Passport Program, however, makes it possible to enjoy workouts on the road that meet your expectations. Because Liberty Athletic Club is a member of IHRSA, the International Health Racquet & Sports Clubs Association, and enrolled in their Passport Program, you have guest privileges to a network of quality clubs when you travel.
What's more, the IHRSA Passport Program provides you
significantly reduced
guest fees- a minimum of 50% savings!
To use the Passport Program, simply contact the sales team for a valid form of Passport ID. To locate a participating club in the area where you will be traveling, visit www.healthclubs.com/passport. Make sure to always call ahead to let the club know you will be visiting. Upon arrival, show the front desk staff your Passport ID, pay the guest fee and you're in! Whether you're leaving town for business or pleasure, there is an IHRSA Passport club waiting to serve you.
