Portion Distortion
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

Portions sizes have increased dramatically over the past 20 years and it's no surprise that Americans weight has too! In a recent report issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the average weight of adult females increased 17 pounds between 1988 - 1994 and 2011 - 2014 while the average weight of adult males rose 15 pounds during the same time periods.

Check out the bar graph below which illustrates increased portion sizes and calories per food plus percentage changes in American obesity over the past 20 years.

Group Fitness at Liberty -
Spotlight on Member Favorites
from the desk of Lori Stefanic, Group Fitness Director

Did you know that Liberty offers more than 300 classes each month, ranging from Spinning to yoga and Pilates to high intensity cardio?  Whether you're just getting into an exercise routine, or have been a fitness enthusiast for years, group fitness classes offer a great challenge for all levels in a safe, fun and supportive environment.

In the coming months, we will spotlight individual classes and hear about which workouts keep our members coming back for more.  Highlighted this month are "Miles to Go," and "LONGevity," both taught by Joan, as well as a new favorite "Abs & Stretch" on Wednesday mornings, now taught by Lindsay.

LONGevity (MONDAYS 12:00-1:00 PM, Group Fitness Studio) is what we call the smart workout for keeping you long, strong, and balanced for life! Mike and Linda Dibble, Liberty members for 20 years, swear by all of Joan's classes - they are a "top priority!"  When I asked Linda to share what she liked most about LONGevity, she replied "She stretches just about every muscle in your body. Good recovery stretches with bits of Pilates and Yoga."

Linda goes on to say that "Joan has designed her classes for men and women, Mike is learning how to use weights properly in a fun way.  Thursday morning is entirely aerobic for 1 hour and it's great especially during the months we can't bike outside. They're great to get the endorphins circulating.   Happiness is a great workout!"  Miles to Go meets on THURSDAYS from 9:30-10:30 am, on the Basketball Court.  This class has all the benefits of walking in a group fitness class. Walking is good for everybody. It strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and wards off disease.

If you are looking for a way to round out your current workout or finish up your session on the floor, give Abs & Stretch on Wednesday mornings a try!  This is a 45 minute class that meets weekly in the Group Fitness Studio from 7:15-8:00 am.  Ruthann, who says she's been a Liberty member for "eons," really likes the class because it gives a full body workout in a short time.  She says "I feel great after the workout, and the class is built around a routine which each participant can put to a level comfortable or challenging to one's own self."

Explore all the things that group fitness classes have to offer here at Liberty.  But, be careful!  You know what will happen if you have fun working out... you just might end up doing it again!

NEW Cancellation Policy
There is no penalty for cancelling out of a CFX class within 24 hours, we still ask that you contact the front desk if you are unable to attend a class for which you are enrolled.

To encourage participants to enroll in classes ahead of time, we will be upholding our class minimum of two participants. This means that we will be cancelling classes that do not have at least two people enrolled 24 hours prior to the scheduled class.

Metabolic Resistance Training (MRT) - 60 Min.
This class targets an extensive range of fitness components:  strength, endurance, power, flexibility, agility and balance.  Designed to improve comprehensive fitness and body composition, it is an intense, highly-effective workout. To achieve maximum results, participants should try to attend this class 1-2 times per week

Strength - 30 Min.
Individuals seeking improvements in strength will find this structured strength class a perfect complement to their existing exercise program.   Small class sizes help to ensure participants receive personalized instruction and appropriate exercise selection, based on needs and abilities.  Following a short, tailored warm-up, classes use functional, whole-body exercises to help promote strength and lean muscle.

Cardio - 30 Min.
This structured interval training class is designed to improve conditioning and burn calories. Not only is this class designed to take the boredom out of aerobic exercise; it is completely unique to each individual.  By using heart rate and perceived exertion, instructors coach participants at an individual level, regardless of fitness.  Participants are strongly encouraged to utilize a heart rate monitor, e.g., the MYZONE, Polar, etc.
