MOCK TRIAL TEAMS COMPETE IN COURT
Mock Trial season began in earnest this week, with both PVPHS teams representing the Prosecution at the annual Constitutional Rights Foundation mock trial competition, The Pen Black and Gold teams traveled downtown to the Los Angeles County Superior Courthouse to argue that the defendant be found guilty of two crimes - human trafficking and false imprisonment. The teams battled over the admission of evidence, the testimony of expert witnesses and the closing arguments, all in the name of learning about the U.S. legal system.
The Black Team was represented by four lawyers (Ryan Daar, Emily Eaton, Emily Schluper, Patrick Woodland), four witnesses (Anna Farias, Nick Serhan, Albert Tan, Irene Zhen) and a clerk (Yuzuka Karube). The Gold Team also sent four lawyers (Shreya Agrawal, Justin An, Brittany Bemis, Meher Jhangiani), four witnesses (Claire LItchfield, Judy Dominguez, Lenny Senaratna, Josh Zeitlin) and the clerk (Cheetah Zhu). The team coaches were delighted to see the team perform so capably. The coaches, all volunteers, are Judith Daar, Jabe Kahnke, Michael Ooley, John Torelli, and Woody Woodland. The team administrative coach, Joanie Gale, makes sure the team always gets where it needs to be.
On Monday the Black and Gold teams will return to the courthouse, this time to argue their client's innocence. The teams are hoping for an acquittal but either way, have learned a lot from the experience of being in court.

PLUS CELEBRATED HALLOWEEN WITH HUGS AND KISSES
This past week, PLUS celebrated Halloween with bugs & kisses and bracelets! The bugs & kisses (Hershey kisses with spider rings) were a special treat to show our appreciation of our fantastic staff. For those who did not dress up on Halloween, PLUS passed out orange bracelets with the phrase "This is my Halloween Costume." We hope that with these bracelets, everyone felt included in the Halloween spirit!
COINS FOR CANCER
On Wednesday, October 26, PLUS collaborated with Service Learning Leadership to host "Coins for Cancer". PLUS and Service Learning members hid 500 pink coins around campus for students to find and redeem for prizes. For every four coins returned, a dollar to breast cancer research was donated. Collectively, Peninsula was able to raise $100! This event not only served as a fun anti-stress activity during Quarter Finals, but as a way to raise awareness and money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation which will donate 91% of our donation directly to research. PLUS and Service Learning want to thank everyone for their enthusiastic participation and for their loving support for the affected families here at Peninsula.
PENINSULA HIGH CELEBRATED DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
The Spanish classes celebrated Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on November 1st and 2nd. This is an important holiday in the Hispanic culture that honors and remembers loved ones who have passed away. Its origins can be traced as far back as the Aztecs. It is meant to be a happy and festive day to remember those who went before us and celebrate their life.
Many Spanish classes learned about Day of the Dead throughout the month of October in preparation for the celebration. They celebrated in a variety of ways: writing reflections about the meaning behind the ofrendas and the values expressed in the tradition, creating their own ofrendas of prominent Hispanic figures who have passed, setting up altars with pictures of loved ones who have passed, and enjoying pan de muertos, chocolate caliente, and tamales. The Spanish National Honor Society hosted a screening of The Book of Life in Spanish the Friday before. Many Spanish teachers and students even painted their faces the day of, to finalize the celebrations!

FRENCH STUDENTS ATTEND MOLIERE PLAY
What Shakespeare is to the English, Molière is to the French, so Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Sam did not want their students to miss out on a classic play "Le Malade Imaginaire" from the famous 17th century actor and playwright.
Pen High
French students had a wonderful time watching "The Imaginary Invalid" at the Noise Within Theater in Pasadena
on November 3rd. When it comes down to it, the best medicine is to be in a room filled with high school students just laughing hysterically!
