HOMECOMING - "ONCE UPEN A TIME"
It was a memorable, jam-packed Homecoming Week for our Panther Family! The week was full of dances from our incredible performance groups and pep squad.  We even had our first PVPHS Teacher/Staff Lip Sync Contest!

Teacher Lip Sync Contest

Friday was the big finale!  Over 140 PVPHS Clubs and organizations participated in the annual Homecoming Carnival.  Delicious food was sold and fun games and activities were available.
Homecoming Carnival

Our Zoo came out in full support of our team for the football game.  During halftime our senior girls on Homecoming Court were presented.
Our Homecoming Dance was spectacular! Co-ed Choreo performed an outstanding dance and our senior boys on Homecoming Court were introduced with a fun dance routine.
Homecoming Dance

ASB under the guidance of Activities Director Season Pollock, worked tirelessly for many weeks to make sure that this year's homecoming was perfect.   The creativity and attention to detail in transforming our school into fables, fairy tales, Neverland, and Wonderland was remarkable.

Thank you to our amazing Activities Director Season Pollock, for yet another memorable Homecoming.  We are so fortunate to have someone who puts so much effort into making sure that every event at Peninsula High is the "BEST EVER."   An Activities Director is key to the culture and climate of any school campus.  They work behind the scenes to create the magic...... thank you Season for all you do.

mean kitty ONE YEAR LATER - THE ROAR IS RESTORED
This week marks the one year anniversary of the most difficult decision I have had to make as the Principal of Peninsula High.  I am sure you remember that dark day when I announced that Peninsula High Football would end their season, forfeiting the last three games.  I am grateful for the community support, the new coaches who believed in Panther Football, and most importantly the players who have given their all to RESTORE THE ROAR!  The Class of 2020 is key to this restoration because they had a choice of where they would play football and they took a chance on Panther Football.

It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get back up!
Vince Lombardi.

Peninsula High School Football has demonstrated what it takes to rebuild a program with our strong freshmen football team.  It takes leadership, a vision, hard work, perseverance, and gratitude.  New Head Coach Dave Young and Freshman Coach Larry Joe Campbell brought a new staff with a commitment and drive to develop the football program.

Incoming freshmen started weight training in April.  They spent the summer conditioning, and by August a dedicated core group of students numbered 34 - the largest freshmen team in years.  Freshmen believed in the new coaching staff vision, and both experienced and new players risked an uncertain playing future at a school that had cancelled the previous season.

The team has dedicated hours to practice; 6 days a week, 2-3 hours a day.  Outside of the practices, the team has enjoyed the camaraderie of weekly team dinners, Saturday morning film sessions and breakfast, and the opportunity to volunteer with the Challenger League.  Parents are equally enthusiastic about driving the players to away Varsity games, providing meals, and volunteering for the snack shack and chains.  It is a Panther Community effort.

Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority!
Vince Lombardi

Now 7-1, these Panthers have consistently outscored their opponents in the first six games.  Running back and outside linebacker Sammy Monroy has racked up seven touchdowns and 61 tackles.  Quarterback Jack Hayworth has thrown for ten touchdowns.  Defensive end Luke Seymour has 7 ½ sacks this season.  Aidan Lieb leads the receivers with seven touchdowns.   With 70 tackles, Sebastian Huizar leads the defensive line.  And running back Henry Thomas has rushed for over 1,000 yards so far this season.  Part of the running back's success has been from a solid line consisting of Jacob Kang, Trevor Hughes, Trevor Hughes, Trevor Brunn, Daniel Meyerhoff, Nathan Campbell, Asher Ruiz and Nima Afshar.

Recently, as Henry was recognized for running over 1,000 yards, Coach Campbell asked different players to standup who had supported Henry.  As the lineman, receivers, running backs, tight ends all stood, coach made the point that each individual's success is a team effort and each player is valuable to the effort.

Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work!
Vince Lombardi.

Take one play at a time, one game at a time, one season at a time

MUSIC BOOSTER SUPPORTS OUR TROOPS
Music Boosters is partnering with "Packages for Patriots."  Most of our men and women overseas have not had a piece of candy in months, and would love to have a taste of that American Halloween tradition!   By donating just half of your Halloween candy (which would probably be tossed out anyway) or pick up and extra bag at the store, you can bring a whole ton of happiness to our homesick troops!

Donation bins  will be located in the Choir Room S33 and the Band Room adjacent to the Kelly Johnson Field House

If you would like to help box up the candy for our troops and earn community service hours, please contact Christine Baumberger at [email protected] for details.

PLUS FORUM
Have you ever been personally selected to participate in a PLUS forum but weren't sure what to expect?  It's fun, you get to know other Peninsula students, and you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our campus by telling us what you want to see happen.  Permission slips for the October 25th forum are due Monday at the end of lunch to Mrs. Tootell in P123.

PARKING CONCERNS (ATTENTION PARENTS)
The manager of Pet Food Express across the street from Pen High called on Friday to discuss concerns about Pen Parents using their parking lot as a waiting zone to pick up their children.  There have been incidents where people have almost been hit, customers complain that they cannot get in and out of the parking lot, and cars parked in the fire lane.  Most disturbing is that parents have been belligerent, foul-mouthed, and uncooperative when asked to move.  This is so disturbing, especially when Peninsula High has such high expectations for student behavior.

Last year, Chase Bank expressed the same concerns and I asked for parent cooperation.  Parents cooperated for a few weeks and then, unfortunately, resumed using their parking lot for pick up and drop off.   Chase is now constructing barricades, which will make the situation even worse for Pet Food Express.

So, this message serves as notice that Pen parents MUST NOT PARK IN THE CHASE or PET FOOD EXPRESS PARKING LOT for the purpose of picking up or dropping off their children.  I will be talking with both managers tomorrow and my recommendation will be to call the Sheriff and give tickets.  We have a process for drop-off that requires patience, but is safe.  For pick-up, there are plenty of spots on Silver Spur during pick up times.  After 1:45pm, most parking spots on campus that are vacant, are safe to park in.  Parking permits and staff parking are reserved during school hours but open after hours.  In the upper staff parking lot, many teachers end their day at 1:45pm, so you may park in open spots at 1:45pm.

Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining our Panther reputation of good citizenship and kindness.  Please remember that our children are watching our actions and learn from us.

CHINESE AMERICAN PARENTS ASSOCIATION
On Tuesday, October 18, the Chinese Parents' Association sponsored an informational meeting for parents.  Thank you to Graham Edwards and Terri Lewallen for your wonderful presentations.

CANCER SUPPORT WRITING CONTEST
Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach (CSC-RB) is pleased to announce the 1st Annual Teen Writing Contest. Any teens that have been impacted by cancer are invited to participate. Because so many of us have been touched by cancer, we appreciate you sharing this information with all teachers and students at your school.

This contest gives teens an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings about a personal cancer experience and to "pay it forward" by sharing their experience with others.  Generous cash prizes are awarded to the top three participants.

Youth in grades 6 through 12 who live in within CSC-RB's service area may enter (see website for cities and zip codes). Their original writing can be about their own cancer diagnosis or that of a family member/friend or the loss of a family member or friend to cancer. Entries will go through two rounds of judging; the first by a panel of judges who are educators, community members and cancer-care professionals. The final judging and the winner selected will be by celebrity judge Carson Daly of The Voice.

The mission of the Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach is to help as many cancer patients as possible recover from the physical and emotional effects of cancer to the greatest extent possible. Our psychological support and educational programs are designed to address the loss of control, hopelessness and social isolation that cancer patients and their families often experience. Our goal is to ensure that no one faces a cancer journey alone. All 165 of our monthly programs are offered at no cost. We hope The Teen Writing Contest will capture teens' imaginations and that the cash prizes will entice them to enter. We also want to open a dialogue about cancer and increase awareness of the Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach as a resource for anyone facing cancer regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status and diagnosis or stage.

Electronic versions of these documents, entry forms and all contest details may be found at www.cancersupportredondobeach/essay. All essays and their accompanying entry forms must be submitted electronically. All entries are due no later than midnight Friday, October 28, 2016.

LOOKING FOR PARENTS TO SHARE THEIR CAREERS AT OUR ANNUAL CAREER FAIR
The Peninsula High College Career Center (CCC) is hosting the 2016 Career Fair on Wednesday, November 16th. We are currently seeking participants who are willing to share their career path and experience with our students at our 4 hour long Career Fair.

The event will run from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (periods 1 through 4, and lunch).  As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to speak with students who are interested in learning more about what you do and what education/experience was required to get where you are today.  This is an event where our students can really learn about possible future careers so the more volunteers we get the better.  If you are interested in volunteering for the day or would like more information please email Julie Arico at [email protected]
