YALE DEBATE PRESIDENT HENRY ZHANG SCORES THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
Henry Zhang, Peninsula High Class of 2013 was a founding member of our award winning Speech and Debate Program.  While at Peninsula High, he was ranked #1 in the country for Lincoln-Douglas and Policy Debate his senior year.  He is an impressive young man who began the legacy of what has become Peninsula High's ranking as one of the top Speech and Debate programs in the country.
Henry Zhang Pen 2013
The Yale Senior appeared on ABC national news to discuss his views on the finer points of formulating an argument and the effectiveness of each candidate's points.  It was so fun listening to him and remembering him as one of our own.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Holden Dahlerbruch, a sophomore here at Peninsula High and international celebrity chef, has teamed up with the district to improve school lunches. (Yay!) In order to initiate this process, he is asking students to complete the School Lunch Survey. The results will help identify areas for improvement and set the path for more students to enjoy school lunches.

A big thank you to Charlotte Rietdyk and Nasim Zeighami, our two ASB Club Commissioners, who oversaw Club Rush and the chartering of all the clubs. They've spent many hours meeting with all club presidents to learn about their clubs' purposes and goals. A list of our current chartered clubs is here.

PEN MUN KICKS OFF THE YEAR AT SOCOMUN
On Saturday, September 23, Peninsula High's Model United Nations club attended the Southern Orange County Model United Nations conference in Santa Margarita.  It was a special occasion for Peninsula's club because it was the first chance for many of the new members to compete in the novice division. It was headed by the newly elected Secretariat Members Joey Black, Sommer DeRudder, and Olivia Mathiesen.

The novice committees, for both freshmen and non-freshman novices, were focused on the United Nations sustainable development goals, allowing for debate about issues ranging from access to water to how to safely educate women and children. They represented the nations of Uganda, Ukraine, Norway, and Costa Rica. The few advanced delegates were able to compete in specialized committees, from a Historical League of Nations committee taking place in the year 1922 to the Organization of American States where the delegates discussed problems facing South American nations. Advanced delegates represented the nation of Bolivia, Afghanistan, Armenia, Australia, and Azerbaijan.

The Peninsula delegates performed very well in this first conference, with novices receiving six outstanding awards and eight commendations, along with a Raza Khan taking home a Best Delegate Award. Advanced received three commendations and two Best Delegates from Juliana Yonis and Sydney Bambardekar! This conference was a very successful first conference and shows PEN MUN is poised for a strong year.

SPEECH AND DEBATE
One-hundred and thirty-nine students from thirty-seven schools attended the fourth annual Loyola High School Invitational on the weekend of 9/10-9/12. In policy debate, the team of Peninsula juniors Atul Jalan and Brian Kong were quarterfinalists (top 8). Brian was second speaker and Atul was sixth speaker. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Jonas LeBarillec and junior Ishan Gaur were octafinalists (top 16). Jonas was also second speaker.

One-hundred, eight schools from twenty-four states attended the thirty-first annual Greenhill Fall Classic on the weekend of 9/17-9/19 at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. Sixteen of the country's best debaters in policy debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate (LD) were also invited to participate in the Greenhill Round Robin prior to the tournament proper. In policy debate, Peninsula juniors Raam Tambe and Jerry Wang were round robin champions. The two won their "pod" with a perfect 14-0 record and were first and second speaker. In the round robin final, the two defeated a team from Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA) in Nashville on a 2-1 decision. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, junior Jonas Le Barillec finished fourth in his pod with an 8-6 record. In the Fall Classic, Jonas finished second in LD--dropping the final round to a debater from Harrison High School in New York. Jonas also was tenth speaker. In policy debate, Raam and Jerry were tournament champions once again, defeating the same MBA team in the finals. The Peninsula junior team of Atul Jalan and Brian Kong reached the double octafinal round (top 32). Jerry was fourth speaker in the Fall Classic, while Raam was sixth. As a result of their finishes, Jonas, Raam, and Jerry received bids to the Tournament of Champions (TOC) at the University of Kentucky in April. Raam and Jerry are automatic qualifiers based on their First Place performance at last year's TOC.

REACHING OUT TO YOUNGSTERS IN OUR DISTRICT
At last Friday's home football game, band students from PVIS and Ridgecrest played alongside our Marching Band. It was a enjoyable visit for all. Come out and support our great football team and be entertained by our exciting new Field Show - A Tribute to Motown, and other fun performances by the band including the popular Trombone Suicide, Upside Down Drumming, and Clarinet Limbo. The next home game is Friday, October 7 against Mira Costa.

Also, at the football game, we were all entertained by members of the Junior Spirit Corp - a group of PV District students in grades K through 8 that worked with the PVPHS Cheer and Song Teams this past week to learn cheers and routines which they performed for us at the game. Hopefully, this is the start of another great Pen High tradition!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are now entering flu season. The CDC recommends the flu vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who do not have contraindications as a first step of protection. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that will provide protection against the flu. Remember that you cannot get the flu from the vaccination. It is likely that, if you become ill, you were exposed to the virus prior to getting the vaccination. If after the two-week period you still become ill, the antibodies produced by getting the vaccination will reduce the severity of illness that you experience. This also will reduce the days lost from school and the stress that students feel when missing in-class assignments or exams. You can find more information here and by speaking with your student's physician. Make sure to wash your hands often, cover coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue, and stay home when you are sick. New research has shown that the protection lasts for six months, so we have entered the appropriate time period to get the vaccination. Most pharmacies and doctors have them in stock now.
I got mine!

Sincerely,
Wendy Keller
School Nurse
