The Sisters of Notre Dame congratulate Joe and Audrey Hamamoto, SND Associates, on a great new venture. Sr. M. Kathleen Burns writes, "Since Joe's ordination to the permanent diaconate on June 11, he and his wife, Audrey, who have always been a couple of great service, have entered more deeply into ministry at St. Cornelius Parish in Long Beach. I am privileged to be working with them in our RCIA program. Their passion to teach the faith and to create a welcoming environment is a great joy for us. It is inspiring to hear Joe preach at the Sunday liturgies. On June 12, Joe gave his first homily at St. Cornelius; at the end of his homily, he called up Audrey, offering her a bouquet of roses and thanking her for walking this journey with him. Our entire parish feels so blessed to have this dynamic and loving new deacon couple!" Joe is employed by Panasonics Avionics Corporation as Senior Manager in Global Procurement, and he also cherishes his detention ministry at Las Padrinos Juvenile Detention Center in Downey. We wish them abundant graces and blessings!

Mustard Seeds
for reflection
This year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday on September 18. Those whom the Catholic community has designated to serve as catechists will be formally commissioned for this ministry.
But Catechetical Sunday also calls us to reflect on the role of each baptized person to share the faith and to be a witness to the Gospel. The Greek root word for "catechesis" means "to echo or resound." Catechesis, then, can be considered to be the act of echoing or bringing the teachings and values of Jesus Christ and the Church to the world. Catechetical Sunday can be a day for rededication to this mission, especially by being an example of Gospel living on a 24/7 basis. As St. Francis of Assisi so wisely taught, "Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words."

Message to our Readers
Dear Friends,
The formal statement of the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame specifically mentions catechesis. Many know us as religion teachers or spiritual guides--in religious education or spirituality programs for pre-schoolers through senior citizens, in Catholic schools, or as retreat leaders, authors, chaplains, pastoral counselors or spiritual directors. Reflecting on the needs of the times, we have discovered a more comprehensive understanding of catechesis as a living echo of the Gospel--very much in the spirit of the corporal and spiritual
works of mercy.
For all who partner with us in our mission of catechesis, as colleagues, friends, volunteers and donors, please know that we are most grateful to you. In the words of one of our favorite community mottos, "where one of us is, all of us are." And so, wherever a Sister of Notre Dame is ministering, in any part of the world, at this very moment, you are present with her. Thank you for sharing in our mission!
