A Message From the Dean
Jacqueline B. Mondros

Welcome to the fall/winter 2013 edition of Impact. As the 2013-14 academic year quickly draws to a close, I want to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of first and second year students.
With a student body that reflects the tapestry of this great city -more than 50% are students of color and half are bi-lingual, speaking languages that range from Arabic, to Bengali, to Korean, to Spanish--we are truly a school that serves diverse communities throughout New York.

Silberman is Recognized by the Hartford Foundation

Named as one of just five Academic Centers of Excellence in Geriatric Social Work in the nation, Silberman will play a pivotal role in reshaping geriatric social work for an aging and diverse urban population.

New Leadership at Silberman
Spotlight on Dr. Mary Cavanaugh: Associate Dean
for Academic Affairs

Mary M. Cavanaugh was recently appointed Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs at the Silberman School of Social Work. Dr. Cavanaugh is responsible for overseeing the MSW program and the development of the BSW program.

Retooling Organizational Management and Leadership MSW Program

Silberman's re-envisioned MSW Organizational Management and Leadership (OML) curriculum is making it easier for human service managers to complete their MSW: the program offers courses on Saturdays and evenings. "Social workers bring a keen understanding of human relationships to their roles as managers that are unmatched by managers trained in other professions, adding tremendous value to human service agencies..." said Dr. James Mandiberg, Chair of OML Committee.

Expanding Continuing Education with the Latino Leadership Institute

Are you thinking of managing a political campaign or running for office? The Electoral Activism & Leadership Academy, co-sponsored by SSW and the Latino Leadership Institute (LLI), is teaching social workers and activists the "nuts and bolts" of running a grass roots campaign. The Academy is offered through the Professional Development and Continuing Education program of SSW.

Raising the Bar: Career Services

Silberman is connecting alums to the job market, to potential employers, and to one another via online and offline initiatives. An alumni only LinkedIn page is the hub of SSW's career services. In the coming months, you will find job search tools, articles, and LinkedIn best practice workshops on SSW's page.

Services are delivered by social work interns in a approach that encourages the participation of student veterans and minimizes the stigma of getting help.
