A Message from Religious School Principal, Lois Tompkins

I was so very proud of our students last Sunday at our Hoshana Rabba services!  I received many compliments from clergy and other adults about their exemplary behavior.  I hope you had a chance to see the great pictures on our Flickr.

Grades 2-5: Hebrew on the Computer!
Now we are ready to get to work.  For students in grades 2-5, our Hebrew Online Learning Center has been set up and is ready for you to use at home.  Most of our students have already logged on at least once and are familiar with the site.

Each student's page is personalized for them, with access to the correct level for their class and/or any extra help that they may need.  Over the next few weeks, I'll be sure to sit with any child who has been given extra home assignments and will contact parents as well, so that they are comfortable practicing and playing at home.  The more that you encourage your child to practice in this fun way, the better their reading skills and prayer fluency will become.  Kids like the games, and the exercises are exact replicas of their text books at school.

To access your child's site, go to www.BehrmanHouse.com   You'll see the "Log In" link at the top of the page.  Your child's log-in will be their first initial and last name, followed by basrs.org.  Their password is simply the first 3 letters of their first name and the first 3 letters of their last name.  For example:
If your child's name is Mary Smith:
User name:  [email protected]    (lower case)
    Password:  marsmi
Their name will appear at the top of the page ("Shalom, Mary") if signed in.
After entering, you'll want to go to the OLC.  Messages from your teachers will begin to appear in the next few weeks, letting you know where we are in the book.

Remember, you will need to make an avatar (cartoon figure representing your child) before you can begin playing!

Please resist the temptation to go too far ahead in the program!  Several students did this last year, but as we tested them, they didn't actually move ahead in their studies. This program is meant only as a supplement to what occurs in the classroom, not a replacement.  Trying to jam all of this into one week doesn't work, whether in the classroom or online!  Reading fluency and prayer skills take time, practice, and patience.

Last year's students should see their book from last year as well as this year's. They are welcome to "play" in their old books!  Also, some students may have an extra "classroom" show up called Alef Bet.  This is a basic primer for students who could use extra help in basic reading skills.  I'll be monitoring and working with these students. They also have their regular classroom book so that they can keep up with their classmates.

Teachers have the ability to see what each of their students completed and when.  I will also check progress as we move through the year, and I'll be in touch with all parents to let you know if everything is on track, or if we need to adjust.

I hope that you will take advantage of this fun way to reinforce your child's skills during the week, outside of our school hours.  It is such an easy way to help your child to excel in their Hebrew studies!

Enjoy,
Lois
Let's Support Sydney's Bat Mitzvah Project!

One of the requirements for me to become at Bat Mitzvah, is to complete a Mitzvah Project. A Mitzvah Project is just one way for me to learn and understand that we are all responsible to try to make our world a better place. For my Mitzvah Project, I have chosen to collect items that are needed for Little Star Center.

Little Star Center is a private, non-profit school that provides comprehensive, affordable, individualized education and behavioral services for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental delays.
