TLO Disciple
February 2016--Faithful in Word

Pastor's Message
"God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." --1 Corinthians 1:9

This month's TLO Disciple focus is on Part One of the TLO Vision:
Faithful in Word
Joyful in Fellowship
Gifted to Serve
Faithful in Word.  God is faithful.  And our faith is completely dependent upon His faithfulness.  The faithfulness of God is our great comfort and strength.  He has made promises to us in Christ Jesus granting life and salvation through the forgiveness of sins.  And he will keep His promises.  He is kind and loving toward us and will not break faith with us. Even if we break faith with God, He invites us to return to Him.  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

This gives us the confidence to step out in bold faith when it comes to living our daily lives.  For by the power of the Holy Spirit through the washing of rebirth in our baptism, we have been brought into fellowship with Jesus through the word of Christ.  This Word has transformed us into children of God, forgiven and faithful follow the Lord's commandments, with His help.  I pray that the resources provided in this TLO Disciple and in every area of our congregation's ministry, will help you be a fully devoted, and faithful follower of Jesus.  God's Word is truth.  May we know and trust His will is best.  For God is faithful.

What does  "Faithful in Word" look like in the life of a believer in Christ?
*   Confidently accepting that God's Word is Truth (2 Tim 3:16).
*  Teaching the true Word of God to our neighbors, community, and world (Matt. 28:19).
*  Being daily in the Word and constant in prayer.
*  Living according to God's calling in Christ Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.
*  Faithfully attending worship services to hear God's Word and to receive God's grace through the Sacraments.
*  Growing in our relationship with Jesus Christ, our crucified, resurrected, and ascended Savior.

We believe that Jesus is the Word of God made flesh to live among us.  (John 1:14).  We teach and read the Word of God, lead and attend Bible studies, prepare for and attend worship services and "pray without ceasing."  (1 Thess. 5:17).  As Christ's disciples, we abide in Him and strive to live our lives in accord with His will.  In this way we grow in our relationship with Jesus and endeavor to walk daily with Him through the working of the Holy Spirit. In the Word
How can I start reading the Bible?
There is no doubt that God preserved His Word through centuries of copying for an amazing purpose! He wants you to know Him through it! If you're interested in reading the Bible, consider this approach:

1. Start with one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John). There you'll learn about Jesus' life.
2. Then read Galatians through Colossians. These are short letters to Christians full of great teachings for faith
and daily life.
3. Next, go back to Acts. Here you'll read the story of how Christianity began.
4. Now read Genesis. As the first book of the Bible, it has key teachings about life and gives a big-picture
perspective of God's work.
5. Then read Romans in the New Testament.
6. After that, keep going with the books of your choice. Be ready for an adventure and for blessing!

Quotes to live by
"One thing, and one alone, is necessary for life, justification, and Christian liberty; and that is the most holy word of God, the Gospel of Christ, as He says, "I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in Me shall not die eternally" (John xi. 25), and also, "If the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" (John viii. 36), and, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God" (Matt. iv. 4)."   Martin Luther, On Christian Liberty
Hearing and Doing the Word

James 1: 19-27

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Hymn of Focus
Almighty God, Your Word is Cast

Almighty God, Your Word is cast
    Like seed into the ground;
Now let the dew of heav'n descend
    And righteous fruits abound.

Let not the sly satanic foe
    This holy seed remove,
But give it root in ev'ry heart
To bring forth fruits of love.

Let not the world's deceitful cares
    The rising plant destroy,
But let it yield a hundredfold
The fruits of peace and joy.

So when the precious seed is sown,
    Life-giving grace bestow
That all whose souls the truth receive
    Its saving pow'r may know.

Sacrament of the Altar
Now, what is the Sacrament of the Altar?  By Martin Luther

Answer: It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, in and under the bread and wine which we Christians are commanded by the Word of Christ to eat and to drink. And as we have said of Baptism that it is not simple water, so here also we say the Sacrament is bread and wine, but not mere bread and wine, such as are ordinarily served at the table, but bread and wine comprehended in, and connected with, the  Word of God.

It is  the Word (I say) which makes and distinguishes this Sacrament, so that it is not mere bread and wine, but is, and is called, the body and blood of Christ. For it is said: Accedat verbum ad elementum, et At sacramentum. If the Word be joined to the element it becomes a Sacrament. This saying of St. Augustine is so properly and so well put that he has scarcely said anything better. The Word must make a Sacrament of the element, else it remains a mere element. Now, it is not the word or ordinance of a prince or emperor, but of the sublime Majesty, at whose feet all creatures should fall, and affirm it is as He says, and accept it with all reverence fear, and humility.

With  this Word you can strengthen your conscience and say: If a hundred thousand devils, together with all fanatics, should rush forward, crying, How can bread and wine be the body and blood of Christ? etc., I know that all spirits and scholars together are not as wise as is the Divine Majesty in His little finger. Now here stands the  Word of Christ: Take, eat; this is My body; Drink ye all of it; this is the new testament in My blood, etc. Here we abide, and would like to see those who will constitute themselves His masters, and make it different from what He has spoken. It is true, indeed, that if you take away  the Word or regard it without the words, you have nothing but mere bread and wine. But if the words remain with them as they shall and must, then, in virtue of the same, it is truly the body and blood of Christ. For as the lips of Christ say and speak, so it is, as He can never lie or deceive.   Read more     -Luther's Large Catechism

Join us for worship, Communion and Bible study this Sunday for the strengthening of your faith, and for the blessings you can share with the body of Christ.  For Christ commands: Do this in remembrance of me for the forgiveness of sins.
