Pentecost no bkgrnd

October 8, 2015  Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.

Fr. Eric will celebrate and preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

October 11 is the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost.

As on most Sundays during "Ordinary Time," the longest season of the church year, vestments and altar cloth are green, the color of growth and life.

The Season After Pentecost is essentially the part of the year that is left over after everything has been accounted for. The name of this season varies widely from church to church-it can be called Kingdomtide, Dominiontide, or Ordinary Time. In most churches, the general theme of the Bible readings and sermons concerns the church's mission in the world.

The Season After Pentecost begins on the day after Pentecost. In the western Church, it ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. In the eastern Church, it ends on 14 November.

Dinner for Eight
Dinner-for-Eight, one of Emmanuel's most loved and longest running traditions, was organized so adults at Emmanuel could have dinner with a small group and get to know others on a more intimate basis. These small gatherings make it possible for parishioners to gain new friendships in a setting that is as elegant or casual as the hosts care to create.

Our next Dinner-for-Eight will be held on Saturday, October 24.  Click on the graphic for more information or to sign up.

There will NOT be a paper sign up sheet this season.  Sign up deadline is October 19.  See you there!

Parish Name Badges name tag

We have upgraded our name badges for use in the church to a printed more permanent version. They are affixed with two magnets, which will not damage your clothing and can be put on easily and quickly. They are currently in baskets in the narthex on the Kensington Ave entrance of the church, alphabetically sorted.

Alternatively, you are welcome to keep your badge in the baskets situated by the ramp entrance. Please replace them after use, unless you wish to take it with you to keep in your car or purse for your next visit to the Emmanuel.

They are expensive collectively, so please take responsibility for them and for any replacement. If we have omitted anybody please let the office know and we will add him or her to the collection.

It is worth noting that if you have a pacemaker fitted you should NOT use the magnetic version. Please let us know that and we will make adjustments accordingly.

Saint of the week: Robert Grosseteste, Bishop Of Lincoln

Feast Day: October 9

Robert Grosseteste (c. 1175 - 9 October 1253) was an English statesman, scholastic philosopher, theologian, scientist and Bishop of Lincoln. Robert was a peasant lad from Suffolk, born about 1175. A. C. Crombie calls him "the real founder of the tradition of scientific thought in medieval Oxford, and in some ways, of the modern English intellectual tradition."

Had the leaders of the thirteenth century heeded this preacher, many of the disasters of the following three centuries might have been avoided. He distinguished himself at Oxford in law, medicine, languages, natural sciences, and theology. He became what is now called Chancellor of Oxford University.

In 1235, he was elected Bishop of Lincoln, in area the largest diocese in England. He promptly visited all the churches in the diocese and quickly removed many of the prominent clergy because they were neglecting their pastoral duties. He vigorously opposed the practice by which the Pope appointed Italians as absentee clergy for English churches (collecting salaries from said churches without ever setting foot in the country). He insisted that his priests spend their time in the service of their people, in prayer, and in study. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he spoke out boldly against ecclesiastical abuses. Back in England, he spoke against unlawful usurpations of power by the monarch, and was one of those present at the signing of the Magna Carta.

Grosseteste's scholarly writings embraced many fields of learning. He translated into Latin the Ethics of Aristotle and the theological works of John of Damascus and of the fifth-century writer known as Dionysius the Areopagite. He was skilled in poetry, music, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, optics, and physics (one of his pupils was Roger Bacon). His writings on the first chapter of Genesis include an interesting anticipation of modern cosmological ideas. (He read that the first thing created was light, and said that the universe began with pure energy exploding from a point source.) He knew Hebrew and Greek, and his Biblical studies were a notable contribution to the scholarship of the day.
