Health Office Updates from BFCCPS
Today you'll find the Fifth installment of the Ben's Buzz Summer Update. Today's issue includes updates from the BFCCPS Health Office for the 2015-2016 School Year.

Health Office:

To ensure that we have the most accurate health information to provide care for your students while they attend school, BFCCPS has mailed a bright pink form as part of our summer mailing.

You must fill out the following forms in advance of the first day of school on Monday, August 31st.
  • Student Information Form
  • Tylenol Permission Form

If you are an RN with a current MA license and your are interested in being added to our sub-nurse call list, please submit the substitute Nurse Form which has been sent home in the summer mailing.

Nut-Sensitive Policy:

All classrooms at BFCCPS are nut-sensitive. This means nuts, or products that may contain nut ingredients, may not be brought into any classroom. Our main purpose is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all students and your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Due to the life-threatening risk of nuts, we are asking parents and volunteers to follow guidelines.

Please note: Individual classrooms may have rules in addition to the following guidelines.

Snack: Snack is held in the classroom and therefore may not contain nuts. Please label or otherwise make sure your student knows which item(s) are for snack and safe for the classroom.

Lunch: May contain nuts, however any student with a lunch that contains nuts may not sit at the nut-sensitive table.

Field Trips: Nut products in snacks and lunch are not allowed.

All Other Special Celebrations: Treats to be shared for special projects or classroom events are not allowed in the classrooms if they contain any type of nuts or are made in a facility that shares nut products.

Head Lice Policy:

BFCCPS has adopted the widely recommended and commonly accepted practice of a non-exclusion approach to live head lice and nits.  The goal of this change is to reduce lost classroom education time for the child who has lice, and for the their classmates during screenings, as it is not a health risk to themselves or others.

The School Nurses want to take this opportunity to let you know what we will do in the case of head lice at school and what you, as parents/guardians, will be expected to do should your child have head lice.

WHAT THE SCHOOL NURSES WILL DO:

1. ASSESS

    1. Check any child complaining of itching of the scalp or neck, who has had a known exposure to head lice, and/or as requested by the student's parent/guardian or teacher for the presence of head lice.

    2. Check any student's sibling attending BFCCPS when a student is noted to have head lice.

2. COMMUNICATE

    1. Will maintain student confidentiality.

    2. Make every effort  to contact the student's parent/guardian before the end of the school day if live lice or nits are found.  The student will not be excluded from school due to the presence of live lice or nits, and may go home at the regular dismissal time, via the student's regular mode of transportation.

    3. Will make information about identification and treatment of lice available to the student's parent(s)/guardian(s) including encouraging them to contact the student's pediatrician for treatment recommendations.

    4. Will communicate with families of the affected grade of the presence of lice in that grade, encouraging monitoring of children at home for lice.

3. CARE

    1. Provide information / serve as a resource to parents/guardians on an ongoing and as-needed basis regarding identification, treatment, and transmission of head lice.

Resources for Parents:

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:

"Head lice are not a health hazard or a sign of poor hygiene and, in contrast to body lice, are not responsible for the spread of any disease. No healthy child should be excluded from or miss school because of head lice, and no-nit policies for return to school should be abandoned."

Please click here for a summary of the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendations, or for a PDF of the complete article published in Pediatrics Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, please click here.

According to the National Association of School Nurses:

"It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that the management of pediculosis (infestation by head lice) should not disrupt the educational process."

"Research data does not support immediate exclusion upon the identification of the presence of live lice or nits as an effective means of controlling pediculosis transmission."

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health:

"Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses advocate that 'no-nit' policies should be abandoned. Head lice are not a health hazard or a sign of poor hygiene and are not responsible for the spread of any disease. No healthy child should be excluded from or miss school because of head lice."
