Eagles Bring DRC Donation Total To $15 Million

 

Each morning nearly 30 million Americans and Canadians awake to the complications of an unforgiving disease known as diabetes, longing for a way to make it go away. Saturday, their dream took the next step toward being realized as The Fraternal Order of Eagles presented its third $5 million check to the University of Iowa as part of a $25 million commitment to The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center.

 

Kinnick Stadium roared with the applause of 70,585 fans as Eagles dignitaries presented the check to University President Sally Mason before the afternoon's football game between Iowa and Louisiana-Monroe. The occasion marked $15 million in donations from the F.O.E. to the University of Iowa.

 

Southgate, Michigan

Kalkaska, Mich., Eagles #4496 recently presented representatives of the Family Readiness Group for the 1071st Maintenance Company of the Michigan Army National Guard with a check for $3,000. The funds were raised through a car show, raffle and auction held during the 4th of July weekend. The 1071st then presented the Kalkaska Eagles with an autographed photo of the troops and a specially-inscribed plaque. A picnic dinner followed.

 

Colonial Beach, Virginia

Colonial Beach, Va., Eagles # 4315 sponsored a breakfast and fishing trip event Aug. 10, for a group of Wounded Warriors from Quantico marine base in Quantico, Va. Potomac River Charters donated the services of their Big Dipper boat. 23 Marines attended the event, with the group catching over 170 fish. Participants were given shirts to commemorate the occasion.

Washougal, Washington

Washougal, Wash., #4390 has donated $3,530 since June 1, 2011 to various causes including Tornado Relief in Decatur, Ala., a local veteran who lost his leg in Afghanistan, The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center, guide dogs for the blind and more than $1,800 in supplies to the Local Veterans Hospital in Vancouver, Wash. The money was used to purchase 5,250 bottles of water for the V.A. Liver/Kidney Transplant unit as well as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, bus tickets, coffee, sugar, creamer and more. More than 20 members showed up to help shop and unload the items. Money was raised through various donations as well as nightly games, eagle eggs and spin the wheel.

 

Stillwater, Minnestoa

Members of Stillwater, Minn., Eagles #94 recently held their 9th Annual Charity Motorcycle Run, raising more than $6,000 for the American Cancer Society. The group led about 75 motorcycles through western Wisconsin, organizing a poker run and silent auction to raise money to help the ACS continue to work toward a cure for cancer. The Aerie served all-you-can-eat breakfast for $5 and offered door prize drawings, dinner and live entertainment afterward.

New Port Richey, Florida

Suncoast Eagles #3153 of New Port Richey, Fla., recently donated $240 to the Gulf High School golf team for the purchase of new shirts. There to accept the check was Gulf High Golf Coach Bret Wiest.

The Suncoast Eagles presented a check for $1,000 to Freedom Excursions, proud partners of the James A. Haley V.A. Hospital Adaptive Sports Program.

Hopkinsville, Kentucky
The Hopkinsville, Ky., Eagles #3423 recently held their 9th Annual Lexi Sabatino Poker Run to help raise money for Dylan Riddle, a two-year-old from Cadiz, Ky., suffering from brain cancer. 592 riders registered for the event, which netted $36,203.38 for Riddle. Each year, the Hopkinsville Eagles hold the poker run to raise money for an ill child in honor of Sabatino. A 2011 Harley Davidson was raffled off during the event.

 

Tooele, Utah

Tooele, Utah, #164 raised $295 during their August steak nights to benefit the Aerie and Auxiliary special projects for the year.

Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Eagles #4299 recently raised $3,799 for the Havasu Community Health Trust for their Heart Program.

Montrose, Michigan

Blueberry Eagles Auxiliary #4090 of Montrose, Mich., recently awarded a scholarship check of $1,046 to student Sam Bober, who is attending Kettering University in Flint, Mich. The Auxiliary raised the money during a Brown Bag Auction Scholarship Benefit.

Valdez, Alaska

Members of the Valdez, Alaska, Eagles #1971 recently celebrated their 100th birthday by making a float in the local Gold Rush Days parade. The Eagles' float was awarded Best Organizational Float in the parade as well as Best Overall Float.
