SUMMER'S LAST GASP!
HIGH LABOR DAY TRAVEL EXPECTED
Here we are: Labor Day weekend 2014, the unofficial end of summer.
Now, we know that summer formally ends on Sept. 22 at the autumnal equinox, but essentially, Labor Daymarks the end of the season.
Across the country, many folks are expected to squeeze in one last long summer weekend vacation. Labor Day weekend travel is expected to reach its highest levels in six years. Nearly 35 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more this weekend.
 Many of the last-minute destinations are beaches. In South Georgia, residents seeking beaches usually east toward St. Simons and Jekyll islands or southwest to the Gulf Coast. Nationally, Myrtle Beach, S.C., is the second most popular East Coast beach destination.
For those folks traveling, the Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related lane closures from noon today, Friday, Aug. 29, through 5 a.m. Tuesday on interstates and other major state routes that access holiday and tourist attractions.
The Georgia DOT traditionally restricts lane closures during major holidays to offset increased traffic. This does not include emergency lane closures that may be necessary.
Georgia DOT offers free resources for travelers. Call 511 within the state or 1-877-MYGA511 (1-877-694-2511) toll-free for real-time traffic information. A "Georgia 511" mobile app is available, and traveler information may also be accessed at www.511ga.org.
Georgia 511 provides statewide traffic conditions, route-specific information and estimated travel times within metro Atlanta. Callers can also access transit providers, major airports, ride-share organizations, Georgia tourism information and 511 systems in neighboring states.
If you're staying around home this weekend, expect a chance of showers with temperatures in the low to mid 90s. Today (Friday) has only a slight chance of showers in the Tiftarea with a high near 95. But on Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are likely, with a high near 92. Scattered showers may continue Sunday with a high near 93.
Labor Day in Tifton is forecast to have a 30 percent chance of showers with a high near 94.

 BEATLES TRIBUTE SHOW
COMING TO TIFTON
The Return, one of the top Beatles tribute bands in the country, is coming to Tifton on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
This year marks a half-century since The Beatles first visited America, changing music and popular culture for decades.
The appearance is hosted by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, a nonprofit organization  supporting the local public library. Proceeds are used for programs and materials at the library.
Patrons may purchase dinner/show tickets for $80 or show-only tickets for $35. Tickets are available at the public library, at Ameris Bank on Second Street in Tifton and online at www.ugatiftonconference.org The dinner begins at 7 p.m. and The Return takes the stage at 8 p.m. They will do two sets: The Beatles early years circa the Ed Sullivan Show, and the Sgt. Pepper years and beyond. The tribute band has performed all over the world, including at Abbey Road studios in London, the Cavern Club in Liverpool, and at venues large and small.
"They are outstanding! Absolutely the best thing next to the originals," says Pete Beaudrault, president and CEO of the Hard Rock Cafe.
Tony Perkins of ABC-TV's Good Morning America says, "They were great! Their energy and enthusiasm jumps off the stage. It was quite fun to watch them and imagine what it must have been like at an actual Beatles concert."

GET READY TO CELEBRATE HISPANIC CULTURE
The 18th Annual La Fiesta del Pueblo, the biggest celebration of Hispanic Culture in South Georgia, is Saturday, Sept. 27, at Tifton's Fulwood Park from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The festival includes music, food, children's games and information booths.
La Fiesta del Pueblo is free and open to the public. In past years, the festival has attracted more than 6,000 people from 33 counties and five states.
Its purpose is to strengthen the network of Hispanic area residents, to promote cultural awareness, to provide opportunities for Hispanics to gain visibility in the community and promote a sense of pride, and to share information on health, education, community activities, youth organizations and social services.

ALL THAT JAZZ!
U.S. ARMY'S JAZZ AMBASSADORS PERFORM TUESDAY
The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors give a free concert Sept. 2 to kick off the 2014-2015 "ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series" at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center.
Although the event is free, ABAC Arts Connection Director Wayne Jones says a ticket is required for admittance to the performance.
Supported and presented jointly by the Arts Connection at ABAC and the Performing Arts Center at TCHS, Jones said the concert is a gift to the community and an opportunity to show support for troops serving at home and abroad.

MOVING WALL STOPPING IN ASHBURN
The Vietnam Moving Wall, a traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., is once  again coming to South Georgia on Sept. 4-7, making a stop in Ashburn.
In 2008, the Moving Wall visited Tifton, setting up at the Eighth Street Middle School track. The Moving Wall is one-third the size of the original and contains the names of the 58,256 men and women who died in the Vietnam War. Their names are listed on the wall in the order of their deaths.
The Wall will be set up in Ashburn just off Exit 82 of Interstate 75. There is no charge to see the exhibits. No drinks, other than water, no cell phones and no music are allowed in the area immediately around the wall. Visitors are asked to be respectful while in the vicinity.

TIFTON HOSTS AG ISSUES SUMMIT WITH LAWMAKERS, FARMERS

The Sixth Annual Ag Issues Summit, hosted by the chairs of the state General Assembly's House and Senate Agriculture Committees, recently was held in Tifton at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture.
The event was designed to give farmers an update on the industry and also provide them a chance to voice their concerns to state legislators.

CASA VOLUNTEER TRAINING BEGINS SEPT. 4
Coastal Plain CASA's new volunteer training begins Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at the CASA office, 126 First Street inTifton. The training course covers all a new volunteer needs to know to begin advocating on behalf of foster children.
The class will meet every Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m fo.r approximately four weeks. Becoming an advocate with CASA means spending a few hours a month helping a foster child find a safe and permanent home.
