Governor's Message

Dear Rotarians,

Happy Summer and congratulations to our clubs, the new Club Presidents and Club Officers as they begin this new Rotary year. With Rotary International's theme of "Light up Rotary", I hope every club and Rotarian will find a way to light a spark of excitement in their hearts and in their communities over the coming months.

Our District Is introducing several new themes and initiatives to help clubs keep themselves motivated and, especially, to make it easier to plan and execute the projects you want to do this year.

We'll be focusing on the fundamentals of success too. Club leaders have been trained in more effective ways to get things done. using strategies of successful businesses. Communication, coordination and collaboration within our clubs and communities will help our efforts and interactions. These efforts will lead to positive and productive results.

Our goals reflect our continued effort to eradicate polio. They also reflect the desire of all clubs to sustain the highest possible levels of humanitarian service, locally and throughout the world.

We also want to acknowledge and celebrate the success of our fellow Rotarians and

Generations Of Rotarians Were Ready for The 4th !

A great holiday for Rotarians...new members, veteran members and family members...to celebrate the holiday and tell the community about Rotary. See more photos below.

What Are The District Plans for This Year? Here are 2014/15 District Goals:

Improve communication, coordination and collaboration with and between clubs for Polio Eradication, Membership, Foundation, Youth Service, and Public Image District initiatives.
Plan and execute at least 5 Rotary Days (1 per Sector) throughout the District to raise community awareness of Rotary Humanitarian Service achievements and to raise funds to support Rotary Foundation initiatives for polio eradication and Annual Fund goals
Increase # of 100% Paul Harris Clubs by 10%.
Achieve 100% club participation of Every Rotarian Every Year Annual Fund targets of at least $100 per member, and 100% member participation at some level ($1 minimum).
Achieve 100% club participation in PolioPlus fundraising, including 100% of each member at some level ($1 minimum), with a target of at least $50 per member. This target does not include major gifts.
100% of district clubs utilize District Grant. (This will require adequate club donations to The Rotary Foundation by June 30, 2014).
80% of clubs to lead or participate in a local or international service project related to one of Rotary's 6 Humanitarian Areas of Focus.
District membership grows by an average net growth of two members per club.
Strengthen relationships between Interact Clubs and their Rotary Club sponsors; increase Interact club and/or Youth Exchange participants by 10%.
Every club demonstrates its commitment to Youth Service, either through support and involvement with a local Interact Club, RYLA or Youth Exchange, or by inviting local youths, identified through local schools, churches or clubs to participate in Rotary Days.
At least 75% of District clubs receive Presidential Citation recognition for their positive efforts to "LIGHT UP ROTARY" in their communities.
5% of clubs achieve District's "BEST CLASS" award.

One New Tool for Getting There -- Organizing The District Into Sectors

, with "Tool Boxes" of Techniques and Resources, and "Consultants" to help you use them.

This year we're trying the Sector structure to help clubs "Communicate, Collaborate and Coordinate better. In the next few newsletters we'll explain more about their use. To see the list of clubs in their Sectors, click here. The goal is to use good business practices to help clubs serve.

educational opportunities and attitudes. Rotarians try to transcend those divisions in many way:

Through peace scholarships...
Through youth exchange opportunities...
Through the alleviation of poverty...
Through the many district and international grants our district has extended...
By providing clean water and education about the importance of sound hygiene to prevent disease...
By combating disease through vaccinations and preventable health initiatives...
By empowering the next generation to take the initiative in being of service to others...

Idea - Plan for Presidential Citation Built Around Your Club's Goals.

Working toward the award can be a good motivator, for club leaders and members. Your club be unique in its own way, and as good as any other. Here's a reminder of which clubs won Presidential Citations last year --

Clubs earning the Presidential Citation With Distinction: Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Huntley, Illinois Beach Sunrise, and Lake Forest Lake Bluff.

Additional Clubs earning Presidential Citation:Bartlett, Glenview Sunrise,Long Grove/Kildeer/Hawthorn Woods, Richmond-Spring Grove Area, Schaumburg AM, Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates, Skokie Valley, St. Charles, and Winnetka-Northfield.

Comments from an Immediate Past President

-- Rotary as Family, and "Why I've Stayed In Rotary".

You might say that Rotary is about service, understanding and fellowship. We all probably have heard Incoming and Outgoing Presidents talk about their hopes and achievements... and how they feel about the experience of getting from here to there in the crucible of their club presidency. By chance your editor heard one such speech which highlighted how "fellowship" can also mean family. As a family working together, we can do more...both personally and as a club. Many members of our club felt this year's induction/transition meeting and speeches were especially good. I hope your club's transition was a good one, too. In that examle club, the new president's hopes, plans and reflections are here. In addition to good fellowship, there was a lot of "food for thought".
