TIFT BLUE DEVILS PLAY FOR
STATE TITLE SATURDAY
This is it -- the Big Dance, our own form of "March Madness!"

The Tift County High School Blue Devils basketball team is playing for the state championship on Saturday, March 8, at the Macon Coliseum.

The Blue Devils, with a 28-3 record, face the Wheeler High Wildcats (with a 30-5 record) of Marietta at 8:45 p.m. Tickets are $12. The game will also be broadcast on 107.5 WTIF radio.

The Blue Devils last won a state title in 1996; the last time they vied for a state championship was in 2004. This is Coach Eric Holland's first trip to the title game with Tift County High.

Saturday's title contest is expected to be a good one as both teams are highly regarded. Wheeler High advanced to Macon with a 67-52 win over Pebblebrook High last Saturday. Tift County High's only loss within the state this year was to Valdosta High School.

JAY DEASON MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNEY
SUPPORTS YOUTH-BASED CHARITIES

The Annual Jay Deason Fund Memorial Golf Tournament has been set for Monday, March 31, at Spring Hill Country Club in TiftonA hole sponsorship is $150.

The tournament raises funds in support of the Tools for School program, the Jay Deason Memorial Scholarship at ABAC and other local youth-based charities, each of which are centered around memorializing Jay's love for children and their wellbeing as well as his goal of becoming an educator.

The Tools for School program was established to provide supplies and educational necessities for

local needy students. The annual $3,000 contribution to Tools for School specifically goes to

assist children in the Tift County School System who are classified as homeless during each school year. These funds are donated to the Board of Education and administered by the system's social workers. The annual Jay Deason Memorial Scholarship targets aspiring early childhood education majors at ABAC to help encourage young adults to pursue an education degree, maintain excellence in his/her pursuit of the degree and thereafter, to enhance the lives of the children they teach.

In addition to these annual programs, the Jay Deason Fund also supports other special causes for youth and have included direct donations to medical funds for local children as well as specific donations to the Tift County School System for supplemental learning software.

The fund prides itself in seeing that the highest percentage possible of each contribution reaches the end recipient; thus, it is 100 percent volunteer run and has no administrative costs. With the continued support of sponsors and volunteers, the Jay Deason Fund has contributed more than $50,000 to youth-based causes since its initial event in May 2007.

JOHNSON OF TIFTON QUALIFIES

FOR STATE SENATE ELECTION

Republican candidate Bryce Johnson of Tifton has formally qualified to run for the seat representing Georgia State Senate District 13

"I am excited and honored about the overwhelming support my candidacy has received in such a short period of time," Johnson says. "I am excited about continuing to campaign throughout the district, speaking with voters about how we can grow our economy and bring jobs by cutting taxes, balancing the budget and reining over-burdensome regulations that suffocate our economy."

He is seeking the seat held by Sen. John "Dickie" Crosby of Tifton, who is not seeking re-election.

Johnson is solicitor-general of Worth County, a position to which he was elected in 2008 and re-elected without opposition in 2012. He also serves as assistant solicitor-general of the Tift State Court, special assistant district attorney in Worth and Turner counties and was an assistant district attorney in Dodge County. He occasionally teaches history at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
