In a two-hour marathon workshop on Thursday, Oct. 10, Tifton City Council continued discussing revisions to its codes regulating signage in the Historic District.

 Jamie Cater told council that the guidelines within the city's Historic District are keeping some businesses from locating there. The meeting was scheduled for a conference call with Leigh Burns in Atlanta, a planner and coordinator with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Historic Preservation Division. The city recently discovered that DNR must review any revisions to the sign regulations within the Historic District because Tifton is a "Certified Local Government." Council directed its staff to further develop proposals dealing with lighted signs, banners, stick (or political-type) signs and electronic "multi-message" signage.
Discussion is expected to continue at council's next workshop meeting. Once the city finalizes its proposal, it will have to go to DNR in Atlanta for review and to the Tifton Planning & Zoning Commission.
The city hopes to have the issue completed by the end of the year.

SUNBELT AG EXPO
NORTH AMERICA'S PREMIER FARM SHOW READY TO OPEN 36TH YEAR
The 36th Annual 2013 Sunbelt Expo is this coming week, Oct. 15-17 in Moultrie. The Expo is an agricultural-based trade show held at Spence Field. 
Known as "North America's Premier Farm Show," the annual event has more than 1,200 exhibitors showcasing the latest in farming technology. The Expo is for both large-acreage production farmers or a as well as weekend lifestyle farmers.
The event attracts upwards of 100,000 visitors from all over the country. Visitors come for three days to peruse 4,000 product lines from commercial exhibitors and capitalize on educational opportunities from university and college research specialists.
Throughout its history, the Sunbelt Ag Expo has been at the forefront of showcasing the future of agriculture.
From the first four- and six-row cotton picker demonstrations and self-propelled peanut combines to the introduction of the cotton industry's first commercially available picker equipped with a built-in on-board module builder, to breakthrough research on new crop varieties, the Sunbelt Expo has always been the place for visitors to see the newest in agriculture.

"The Sunbelt Expo embraces change;
it's just amazing to look at how far we've come and where we will be going," said Expo Executive Director Chip Blalock. "We are constantly looking at new technologies and new products and services, and their representation at the show is an asset to our visitors."
And this year, rather than just slamming doors and kicking tires, visitors will be able to slip into the front seat and get an up close and personal driving experience during test rides on specially designed tracks both inside the exhibit grounds and in the field demo area.
Visitors can put pickups, ATVs and tires through different "Ride & Drive" courses for performance testing. Company representatives will be on hand to answer questions and review the unique features of their equipment.
John Deere, Chevrolet, Honda, Yamaha and Titan Tire are participating in test tracks.

STEPPING OUT FOR YOUR HEART
RUN IS SATURDAY, OCT. 12, AT TIFT NORTHEAST CAMPUS
The annual Stepping Out for Your Heart 5K Run and One Mile Walk will be held on the  morning of Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Northeast Campus of Tift County High School.
Proceeds from this event benefit the Tift Regional Medical Center Foundation's "Heart Safe Community" program, which provides community organizations with automatic external defibrillators and area paramedics with 12-lead EKG machines.
The program also financially aids the families of TRMC cardiac patients with special needs.
"This is a fun family event that also advances our health care needs," said Mandy Brooks, TRMC Foundation director. "A cardiac event can happen to anyone, and when that occurs, we want to have the best equipment and services available for response and treatment."
The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. and the One Mile walk starts at 9 a.m. There will be a special Champion's Fun Walk at 8:45 a.m. to honor all heart disease and/or stroke survivors.
"We encourage local residents to come out and get active and support a worthwhile cause," said Brooks. For information, call 229-391-3310.

A-MAZE-ING ZOMBIE RUN
GET CHASED BY ZOMBIES OCT. 26
Guys, girls, and ghouls of every age can come out to the Georgia Museum of Agriculture at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Oct. 26 at 9:30 a.m. for the second annual  A-Maze-ing Zombie Run.
The race includes a one-mile fun run and walk through a portion of the GMA's Historic Village, including the Corn Maze, as zombies jump out and chase runners along the course. The race starts at the Country Store parking lot and ends at the Opry Shelter. The Museum's 1917 steam locomotive will return runners to the Country Store parking lot.
All participants receive an event T-shirt. Trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male finishers and the first five youth finishers. Special zombie awards, such as best scream, will also be given.
Registration on the day of the race opens at 8:30 a.m. with a race start time of 9:30 a.m. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Children who are easily frightened should not participate.

IT'S CRITTER SATURDAY!
Visitors can take part in the Chicken Chase or pick out the perfect frog for the frog-jumping contest at "Critter Saturday" on Oct. 12 at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
 The Flint Riverquarium will bring out animal friends. Guests may interact with animals from the Chehaw Wild Animal Park or visit the Museum's Langdale Nature Center, where they can touch and hold various animal skeletons, skulls and pelts. Current live residents of the Langdale Nature Center include a central rat snake, a corn snake, an eastern king snake, turtles, frogs and a variety of fish. The ABAC Equestrian Club will be on hand with roping, barrel racing and jumping demonstrations. One highlight will be a free goldfish for small children. For information, call (229) 391-5205.

CROSS COUNTRY MEET
SET SATURDAY AT ABAC
Tifton will host the 12th Annual Tift County Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 12 at  Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
The high school girls run first at 9 a.m., followed by the high school boys, then the middle school teams.
More than 700 student runners from around South Georgia -- including Tifton, Brunswick, Bainbridge, Valdosta and Albany -- will be competing.
