October -- a time for fall harvests, pumpkins, Halloween ... and breast cancer awareness.
Once again, the city of Tifton is "painting the town pink" with local businesses participating in showing the color.
In the video at left, The Tifton Grapevine talks with Gayle Cooper of the Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation of the Greater Tiftarea and with Debra Hardeman Prince, the women's health navigator at Tift Regional Medical Center, about local activities and the prevalence of breast cancer in our community.

COUNCIL EXPECTED TO VOTE ON SIGN REVISIONS MONDAY

Tifton City Council is expected to vote on revisions to its codes regulating signage at its regular meeting 5 p.m. Monday in the municipal courtroom.
 After months of community meetings, city staff is recommending loosening some regulations in the city's Historic District -- allowing direct lighting of signs in the Historic District and letting businesses use a banner and up to five stick signs in the district.

restrictions "on the commercial people in the Historic District than we are on the people outside. I certainly don't want to get into that."
"We already are," replied Bert Crowe, city environmental management director.
Councilwoman Julie Smith explained that "the Historic District is a special, separate district that is treated differently..."
"Oh, it's definitely treated differently," the mayor said.
"...That is treated differently but it's for a good, specific purpose," Smith said.
The city's proposed revisions would also amend its Land Development Code to officially allow blinking, flashing and scrolling signs in commercial zones. Such signs are currently prohibited throughout the city but are nonetheless being used.

TIFTON'S CAITLIN CARMICHAEL
ALL OVER BIG & SMALL SCREEN
Tifton native Caitlin Carmichael, 9, continues to be very busy with her film career in  Hollywood. She just attended the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, "A Country Christmas," last Sunday, Sept. 29.
And in the past couple of weeks, she was invited to an Emmy's party and hung out with celebrities and Emmy nominees, and  walked the red carpet with other child stars for the Warner Brothers world premiere of the original "Wizard of Oz" in 3-D IMAX at the Chinese Mann Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.
Caitlin has a lot of projects being released soon. Her movie "Forgetting the Girl," which she filmed in New York, is having a limited theatrical release on Oct. 11; her short film, "Bedbug," will be out Oct. 25; she recently did an Old Navy commercial and an American Girl commercial (for "Saige," the doll of the year); she did an episode of the cartoon "The Legend of Korra" for Nickelodeon (it was a voice-over role); and just finished an episode entitled "In the Blood" for TV's "Criminal Minds," which will air Oct. 30.

'Wiener Dog Nationals' Movie Trailer

Her movie "Wiener Dog Nationals" is still gaining a lot of attention across the U.S. It was released on July 2 and won the Newport Film Festival in the spring. It has now earned a spot at the Hollywood Film Festival and will be shown there on Oct. 19, says Catlin's mother, Cathy Carmichael.
Caitlin also has been filming Season 2 of the web series "Chosen" for Sony, and Season 3 will film from mid-November through mid-December.
But with her busy schedule, Caitlin still has time to be a kid. Mom Cathy reports that Caitlin "continues to stay busy with extracurricular activities such as soccer and voice lessons, in addition to swimming and riding her bike as often as she can."

CLEANING OUR COMMUNITY
'ONE STREET AT A TIME'
Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers is holding another "One Street At A Time" cleanup, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at the corner of Washington Street and Wilton Avenue.
She said the event is designed to help beautify the community. Snacks will be available for participants, and drawings will be held for cash and gift cards.
Chevers has headed for the project for the past five years. For information, call her at 229-326-0241.

TIFTON'S BROWNLEE SIGNS WITH
N.Y. KNICKS
BUT WAIVED DAYS LATER
Justin Brownlee, 25, Tifton native and former Tift County High Blue Devils basketball star, has had a roller-coaster of a week.
On Monday, the NBA's New York Knicks announced they had signed Brownlee, a forward,
 to a non-guaranteed contract that merely adds players to training camp. Then this past Wednesday, the Knicks reported they had signed veteran guard Chris Douglas-Robert and waived Brownlee. An ESPN writer tweeted that Brownlee may have gotten hurt in practice. Knicks Coach Mike Woodson says Brownlee could end up playing for the Knicks' D-League affiliate at Erie, Pa., this season, according to CBS News. Brownlee played at St. John's University from 2009-2011.
Brownlee, 6-foot-7 and 219 pounds, was a member of New York's entry in the NBA Summer League each of last two summers, and averaged 4.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.20 steals over 16.1 minutes in five games this past July in Las Vegas. He played for San Diego of the ABA last season after playing for Maine (NBADL) and in Mexico (Nuevo Laredo) in 2011-12. He averaged 8.0 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists over 23.5 minutes in 50 games for Maine and 13.6 points and 6.0 rebounds in 10 games for Nuevo Laredo. As a member of the Tift County High Blue Devils basketball team, Brownlee made first-team All-State and was named the Region 1-AAAAA and Tiftarea Player of the Year in 2006.
He scored a career high 42 points in a double-overtime loss against Lowndes that same season. He averaged 20.5 points per game as a senior.

IT'S AUTUMN!
PUMPKIN PATCH, CORN MAZE OPENS
The annual pumpkin patch and corn maze opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
They will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The pumpkin patch is at the Country Store near the museum entrance and the corn maze is in a new location behind the Wesley Chapel in the Historic Village.
In honor of one of Georgia's largest commodities, the maze is cut in the shape of a peanut this year. Those willing to brave the twists and turns of the maze will encounter facts about the Georgia peanut industry and learn about the history of the peanut.
In connection with the corn maze and pumpkin patch, Fall Frolics events are scheduled every Saturday in October. Visitors may view a Civil War encampment on Oct. 5.

TIFTON SINGER FINISHING NEW ALBUM
Tifton native/country music singer-songwriter Kip Moore is wrapping up production of his second album, and CMT reports that Moore is writing songs about his life today.
" 'Up All Night,' Moore's debut, was something of a nostalgic project for him. He has even called it his 'looking back' record. Not that the fans minded one bit. The album was one of the biggest-selling country debuts of 2012 and gave us hits like 'Somethin' Bout a Truck,' 'Beer Money' and 'Hey Pretty Girl,' " CMT notes.
"But while his past may have held all the inspiration for his first record, he says now it's the present day that interests and inspires him."
No release date for the album has been announced. Moore is nominated for new artist of the year at this year's CMA Awards.
He resumes his tour Saturday, Oct. 5, in Flagstaff, Ariz., after a short break. At his concert in Charlottesville, Va., two weeks ago, Moore wowed the audience, according to the University of Virginia's student newspaper, the Cavalier Daily.
"Moore proved to be just as comfortable on the Charlottesville stage as he'd be on one of the dirt roads of his youth," the reviewer wrote. "Moore picked back up with the chart-topping 'Somethin' 'Bout A Truck,' and I was ready to hop behind the wheel of the next pickup I saw and hightail back to his hometown of Tifton, Ga. -- stick shift be damned. His boyish energy was enough to make even a city girl like me feel right at home in that 'farmer's field,' " she wrote.

 TRICK-OR-TROT
5K & 1-MILE FUN RUN ... IN COSTUME!
The Tifton Junior Woman's Club is holding a 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run, the "Trick-or-Trot," on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Tiftarea YMCA's Hunt Park campus at 1823 Westover Road in Tifton.
T-shirt and registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K  beginning at 8 a.m. and the 1 mile at 8:45 am.
Runners are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. Awards will be given to best runners and costumes.
A bouncy house for the kids and door prizes for the attendees are part of the event.
Runners may pre-register at $20 for the 5K and $10 for the 1 mile (if received before the Oct. 11). After that date, the fee will increase to $25 for the 5K and $15 for the 1 mile.
Proceeds benefit Tifton Junior Woman's Club charitable programs, including a scholarship program for local, deserving female high school students.

FUNDRAISER IS SATURDAY, OCT. 5, IN OMEGA
 South Georgia's "Walk Like MADD" begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Ponder Park in Omega. The event is a 5K non-competitive family walk that raises funds to support Mothers Against Drunk Driving's mission of eliminating drunk driving, supporting victims and their families and preventing underage drinking.

CHARITY 'JOG' IS SATURDAY
The 6th Annual "Jog for Jake" 5K and 1-Mile Run is 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Tift County High School.
The event raises money for Toys for Tots to benefit Tift County children at Christmas.

CROP SCIENCE SOCIETY FELLOW
TIFTON RESEARCHER GETS HONOR
A researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Tifton has been elected a Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA).
 Dr. C. Corley Holbrook is the research leader for the Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit for USDA's Agricultural Research Service office in Tifton. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. degree from North Carolina State University. CSSA members nominate worthy colleagues based on their professional achievements and meritorious service. Only 0.3 percent of the society's active and emeritus members may be elected Fellow. The award will be formally presented at the CSSA awards ceremony Nov. 6 during the scientific society's annual meeting in Tampa.
