Our Mission: To Know Jesus Christ and to Make Him Known

From the Desk of the Rector-

In the Gospel lesson this week from John, Jesus is enroute to Jerusalem for His final triumphal entry before He would be arrested, beat, spat upon, and nailed to a cross. He and the disciples made a stop in Bethany at the home of his friends - Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Martha was preoccupied with serving her guests and making them feel as welcome as possible. Mary, on the other hand, was listening as Jesus was speaking and while He was speaking, she anointed him with a pure nard (perfume) which was valued at 300 Dinari. Mary gave her most costly possession to Jesus as a show of her love and appreciation. She regarded what Jesus was saying and/or teaching as her top priority. Listening to Jesus teach and showing her appreciation by anointing Him was most important for Mary. She was not distracted, nor did she place too high a value on her perfume such that it could not be utilized. Jesus was her priority more than anything else. Often, in our lives we get distracted by all the things that we need to do before the day closes and we forget to give God any of our time in prayer, fasting, meditation, or study. Lent is an excellent time for us to order our lives in such a way that God takes precedence. Mary kept “the main thing the main thing.”

Let us seek to do likewise in our lives.

Lenten Blessings,

Fr. Reginald

Music for Easter Day

Dear Friends,

I am very eager to share the “musical menu” for Easter Day. Both the 8:15 AM and 11:00 AM services will include full choir, brass quintet, organ, timpani, and auxiliary percussion. The Handbell Choir and Children’s Choristers Choir will be joining the Adult Choir at the 11:00 AM service!

The Prelude: Musique Royale by Michel Richard Delalande (1657-1726). Delalande was a French Baroque composer and organist who was in the service of King Louis XIV. This piece features the brass quintet, timpani and grand organ, setting a triumphant atmosphere for the Day of Resurrection!

Processional and Recessional Hymns: Our processional hymn,

Jesus Christ is Risen today, is arranged by the famous British composer, John Rutter. The hymn begins with a heralding fanfare from the brass quintet and concluding with a soaring soprano descant and reharmonization for the last verse. The recessional hymn, Crown Him with Many Crowns, is arranged by the late composer, Johnnie Carl, who was the incredibly talented and revered orchestrator/composer in residence at the Crystal Cathedral. This joyous arrangement begins with organ and brass, features the congregation beautifully on all verses, and concludes with a key change to D Major!

The Offertory: Worthy Is the Lamb from George Frideric Handel’s

(1685-1759) Messiah, which is an English-language Oratorio composed in 1714. Messiah was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742 and received its London premiere a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. This triumphant chorus is an acclamation of Christ's victory over sin and death and is drawn from Revelation 5.

The Postlude: Hallelujah Chorus, also Handel’s Messiah. However, there’s something particularly special about this—YOU! Ushers will be handing out a congregation friendly bulletin insert so that any and all may participate. If you do not read music not to worry, the words will also be printed in the bulletins. Hallelujah!

May all of you have a blessed, happy, and joyous Easter Day and Easter season! Thank you for your enthusiastic and continued support of the Music Ministries at St. Aidan’s!

Most sincerely, your Choir Director and friend,

Charles Higgs
