SCPS Celebrates School Social Workers Week

School social work is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School social workers bring unique knowledge and skills to the school system and the student services team. School social workers are trained masters-leveled clinical mental health professionals who can assist with mental health concerns, crisis response, positive behavioral support, social skill development, academic and classroom support, attendance and truancy assistance, consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy.

"In the tapestry of education, school social workers are the threads of compassion, weaving empathy, support, and understanding into the fabric of students' lives. National School Social Work Week is a canvas to celebrate their profound impact a masterpiece of care, advocacy, and transformative influence."

-Dr. Terriyln Rivers-Cannon, Board President for the School Social Work Association of America.

School social workers are instrumental in furthering the mission of SCPS. We strive to help provide a setting for teaching, learning, and for the attainment of competence and confidence for all our students. Our direct-service model is dynamic and individualized to each student and family allowing for comprehensive service delivery at each grade level. School social workers enhance our district's ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school, and community collaboration is the key to achieving student success.

Former Milwee Students Create Innovative AI-Driven Technology

Mark Bruckert and Owen Burns met in a web development class at Milwee Middle School, where they began transforming ideas into usable technology. Bruckert began to save some of those ideas into a digital file in case they might be useful someday.

Years later, Bruckert and Burns reconnected during a freshman orientation at UCF. A few weeks into their first semester they had an idea they believed might provide “a little magic” to help companies easily integrate their software. Over the next three years, these two computer science majors won several competitions to generate financing for their idea. Together, they put in 3,000 hours and a grand total of $1,000 of their own money to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven system they call ToolCharm.

Their magical moment happened late one night when their technology finally worked the way they imagined: seamlessly and within milliseconds. Bruckert and Burns are quoted saying this, “A magic potion that no one else has, and we created it!”

Four months later these UCF students and Burnett Honors Scholars, agreed to sell ToolCharm to a leading fintech company, OneEthos. “We took a gamble on ourselves,” Bruckert says, “and it’s safe to say we made a good return on our investment.”

This is the kind of innovative thinking we encourage all of our students to have. Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment, we can't wait to see what Mark and Owen create next!

SCPS Students Participate in Local Community Event
