Chancellor's Office - Monthly Report - Women's History Month

March 5, 2025

Dear LACCD Community,

As we step into March, we celebrate Women’s History Month, honoring the achievements and contributions of women who have shaped our communities, industries, and institutions—including the remarkable women leading and learning within LACCD. Our District takes pride in serving one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation, and I remain committed to ensuring an inclusive and equitable environment where all students can thrive.

This month, East Los Angeles College (ELAC) had the privilege of hosting Governor Gavin Newsom and key state leaders for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) event, where the Governor announced vital plans to address wildfire recovery and climate resilience. ELAC’s selection as the venue for this critical conversation underscores the essential role community colleges play—not just in education but in workforce development, environmental sustainability, and community resilience.

As we navigate ongoing shifts in higher education, workforce needs, and student support services, LACCD remains focused on adapting to meet these challenges head-on. Our commitment to representing all students drives us to invest in innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and policies that expand pathways to success.

Through it all, one message is clear: community colleges transform lives. Whether it’s preparing students for in-demand careers, providing support through life’s challenges, or offering a high-quality, affordable education, LACCD is leading the way. Thank you for your dedication to our students and for being part of this journey.

Scoring On & Off the Field + Coaching Milestones

The Wildcats Athletics program, comprised of 189 student athletes, earned a combined Fall 2024 GPA of 3.03. Women’s Basketball had the highest team GPA of 3.52.

Veintwain Herron, Women’s Head Basketball Coach, recently achieved his 100th career victory. As of February 18, the Women’s team achieved a season record of 16-10. Anthony Jones, Men’s Health Basketball Coach and Wildcats Athletic Director, achieved his 150th career win and was recognized at a recent game by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA). As of February 18, the team was enjoying a 20-6 record for this season.

Women’s Soccer achieved its best season record in recent memory with 8 wins, 10 ties, and 4 losses. This was all the better as the team is now led by a WLAC Soccer alumna, Stephanie Banuelos Valencia (see profile at https://youtu.be/5ya4s-AZcos?si=HuSNnlr-1W7WEgBR). Valencia credits her experience as a student playing soccer at West with keeping her on track academically and allowing her to transfer to CSULA.

After taking a conservation studies class, Murkwood was recruited by college partner Nature Nexus Institute to assist with habitat restoration, guided tours, and trail monitoring and maintenance.

Murkwood is also part of the Ballona Creek wetlands community outreach team, which offers guided bird tours and information about nature. Murkwood volunteers at the Natural History Museum in the ornithology and mammalogy department doing specimen preparation and fluid checks, along with data input. Dr. Jo Tavares-Reager and Dr. Arease Edison presenting at Finding Hope Zoom session

From Climate Chaos to Resilience: Finding Hope in Community

The CA Center from Climate Change Education at West hosted a lunch-and-learn Zoom session open to employees and students across the District in mid-February. The 60 attendees learned why there has been such an increase in both the frequency and size of wildfires in the last decade. Information was also provided on how natural disasters like the recent fires affect us emotionally and psychologically as impacted individuals, those related to impacted individuals, and as a collective. In addition to the obvious financial implications, there is trauma, grief, anxiety, displacement, migration, and social fragmentation.

In the aftermath of events such as this, said the presenter, it is important that we increase emotional literacy. Being better equipped to name our emotions helps individuals and others understand what they need. It can also help manage stress and/or depression. Additionally, better communication helps foster empathy and stronger connections with others. Presenters included Dr. Jo Tavares, Climate Center Director; WLAC Professor Holly Bailey-Hoffmann; and Dr. Arease Edison, Licensed Clinical Therapist.

West Joins Men of Color Action Network (MOCAN)

West has been accepted into the Men of Color Action Network (MOCAN). MOCAN advocates for California Community College men of color, while focusing on the systemic (academic, political, social) change needed to cultivate a learning environment that optimizes the success of male students of color. Cross-campus partnerships, institutional efforts, and culturally relevant activities are being implemented throughout California Community Colleges to increase the success for men of color. Benefits of membership include: Complimentary access for up to 10 professionals and unlimited students to the Annual MOCAN Leadership Conference; Other professional development workshops and events; and Resources for program development, funding guidance, and institutional best practices.

WLAC Customized Training Partnership With DENCO

Denco Family, a privately held company that owns franchise restaurants and several hotels, turned to the noncredit Adult Education Program and Career Center at West to provide ongoing skills training for its employees. In fact, Denco will require that some of the asynchronous remote classes being offered must be taken by any employee who wants to be considered for promotion into management. This new partnership came into being after Denco described its needs and goals to Los Angeles Regional Consortium (LARC). LARC then referred the employer to West.

Valley College Celebrates Black History Month

The LAVC Umoja Black Scholars Program, in collaboration with the college’s Black Student Union, Anti-Racism committee, and Associated Student Union (ASU), hosted a variety of events to celebrate Black History Month (BHM).

Students, faculty and staff from across the campus gathered to embrace their artistic talent by creating their own sneaker painting while grooving to music at Rhythm & Paint, and made African drums with a cultural drum naming ceremony. To support the mind and spirit, there was a mental health workshop that focused on relaxation and well-being through the use of music and practicing mindfulness.

One highlight was the annual Valley Young Black Scholars Day with students from LAUSD Region North, and Umoja programs at LACCD colleges. Students attended college prep workshops, met college and university reps, learned about academic programs and pathways, and had fun activities with Tommy the Clown and a dance battle in the South Gym. One participant commented “This is the first time I have seen so many Black students in one place!” and another said “Can’t wait for next year!”

The month-long celebration culminated with the BHM Sneaker Ball with music and everyone wearing their favorite sneakers.

Netflix Partners with LATTC for Second Year of Work Study Program

On February 4, 2024, Netflix hosted a culmination ceremony for four LATTC students who completed a three-week work study program. During the program, the students were exposed to real-world work situations, and enhanced their proficiency in leadership development, building operations, and construction. Program participants and LATTC Construction, Maintenance and Utilities students Illiana Abarca, Iraima Martinez, Michelle Oberman, and Darlene Ramirez, each gave a formal presentation of their experience at Netflix.

Now in its second year, the program’s cohort of students was unique in that it comprised of all women. The construction industry is a major contributor to the U.S. economy, employing eight million workers and creating nearly $2.1 trillion worth of structures each year according to the Associated General Contractors of America. In spite of these impressive industry numbers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women only make up 10.9% of the national building trades workforce. Opportunities, such as the Netflix work study program, support and train women to reduce skill gaps and create a more equitable workforce.

This year’s event offered a deep dive into the economic forces shaping the region and beyond, covering key topics such as the impact of Hollywood strikes, shifts in immigration policies, wildfire recovery, and evolving global trade dynamics.

Governor Gavin Newsom attended the event to address the economic toll of recent wildfires, highlighting the state’s recovery efforts and his vision for California’s future. In a press conference, he unveiled plans to fast-track permits, support rebuilding efforts, and accelerate housing development to meet the state’s growing needs.

This event reinforced the importance of informed decision-making and proactive strategies in building a resilient economy for Los Angeles and California.
