Help with Daily Chores at Horse Rescue and Sanctuary

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary

Date/Time: Ongoing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30–5:30 p.m.

Location: 19801 Sheridan Street, Southwest Ranches.

Ages: Families and children of all ages are welcome to volunteer together. Teens between 13-17 years old can volunteer independently after a parent or guardian comes out to fill out releases and waivers.

Time Commitment: Up to five hours per visit.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. needs volunteers who are willing to come out and assist with daily chores at the horse rescue and sanctuary. This facility houses over 70 animals including horses, miniature horses, goats, donkeys, farm pigs, a hinny, and sheep. Volunteer tasks include interacting with the animals at the ranch and learning how to do daily ranch chores. Volunteers start their shifts with chores like cleaning the stalls and cleaning and refilling water buckets. Once the work is done, volunteers can interact with the animals, including grooming, braiding, and bathing as needed. Please wear closed-toe shoes or boots. Do not wear expensive shoes as they will get dirty and sometimes wet. Volunteer dress is casual (T-shirts and jeans or shorts). Do not wear expensive jewelry or clothes because the jewelry could get lost, and the clothes could get stained. You might want to bring sunscreen, bug repellent, and a hat, but they are not required. If you want to have a snack and drink, please bring your own cooler marked with your name. We will provide water, but we have no vending machines. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have not volunteered for the ranch before, you will need to complete a volunteer waiver on your first day. Minors must have a parent or guardian come in to sign the paperwork. Work is available at the ranch rain or shine. In addition to the Tuesday and Thursday volunteer time, there is an Orientation and Safety Class on the first Saturday and the third Sunday of every month from 1–1:45 p.m., followed by three hours of volunteering to complete ranch chores.

Food Rescue US South Florida

Food Rescue US South Florida is a leader in reducing both hunger and food waste in America by transforming a negative, food waste, into a positive, delivering fresh, healthy food to millions of people through our community of dedicated volunteer food rescuers. Food rescuers pick up excess food from local food donors, including grocery stores, restaurants, corporate dining facilities, and other food providers, and deliver it to local social service agencies providing for the food insecure. Rescuers use their own vehicles and an app to select times that are convenient for them to pick up and drop off the excess food. The process is quick, simple, and incredibly rewarding. Our food rescues are designed to be convenient for rescuers and quick so that the food spends minimal time in transport.

Cards for Hospitalized Kids

7290 W. Devon

Chicago, IL 60631

Ages: Everyone can participate.

Time Commitment: Varies.

Cards for Hospitalized Kids is an internationally recognized charitable organization that spreads hope, joy, and magic to hospitalized kids across America through uplifting, handmade cards. Your family can help by making cards. Here are some guidelines for creating your cards:

  • The only supplies you need are paper and a writing utensil, such as crayons, markers, etc. You may use other supplies such as stickers and glue-on craft decals, but please do not use any supplies, like glitter, that might fall off of your cards.
  • Do not address the card to a specific child, as we don't know the name of the child yet. At the request of hospitals, we ask that you do not write "get well," "feel better" or other illness-related comments. Include uplifting messages in your cards. Click here for suggestions.
  • Do not write any religious comments such as "God bless" or "I'm praying for you."
  • Sign your cards with your first name only. Do not include any personal information, such as phone number, address, email address, etc.
