A More Sustainable Alternative for Grocery Waste
Nearly 30% of food in American grocery stores is thrown away each year, amounting to about 16 billion pounds of food waste annually. For waste not suitable for composting, recycling or other alternatives, it typically gets sent to landfills.
This poses a problem because organic waste at landfills emit methane, a greenhouse gas 80x more potent at warming the environment than carbon dioxide. For grocery waste specifically, it has been estimated that ~60% of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills are from food waste.
A Better Alternative
Synthica is a leading energy transition platform that aims to design, build, own and operate large-scale, contracted anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities to convert pre-consumer organic waste into carbon negative renewable natural gas (RNG). Currently, Synthica has an operating facility in St. Bernard, Ohio, and has broken ground on new facilities in San Antonio, Texas and Rome, Georgia. By working with grocery businesses that can supply leftover food, Synthica can provide a more sustainable alternative for food disposal when compared to landfills.
To combat methane emissions, Synthica leverages its state-of-the-art depacking and decontamination system in its AD facilities to accept a wide variety of recalled and spoiled waste (cans, jars, bottles, jugs), making it an ideal partner for grocery stores, food distribution and food service companies as well general food and beverage manufacturers, processors and distributors. After feedstock acceptance, Synthica captures the methane generated from anaerobic digestion of the waste, and upgrades the biogas to a carbon negative RNG.
If you are curious as to whether Synthica is a long-term partner or are interested in whether Synthica can process your feedstock in a cost competitive manner, please click the button below to fill out our questionnaire, and we will determine whether your feedstock is amenable for anaerobic digestion. If we determine it is, you may be eligible for a free COD test and an in-person assessment of your waste.
