It is with deep sorrow that the community of

St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church

announces the passing of

ALIS "MARY" POLADIAN

Age 87, passed away on March 16, 2025

On this sad occasion, the Pastor, Board of Trustees, and all the auxiliary bodies of St. Sarkis Church, extend their heartfelt sympathy to Alis’s family members.

Alis “Mary” Poladian was a lover of laughter and good times, and nothing made her happier than being with family, reminiscing, and playing a mean game of crazy eights. Born in April, 1937, Mary grew up in the little Armenian community of Whitinsville, Massachusetts, the third of four children born to Simon and Lucig Bagian. Mary was set on a family love, booming laughter and enduring friendships.

Mary was never without a spark of confidence (and a bit of mischievous) in her eyes as she grew from a young girl, who hunted for wild blueberries in the woods, tore down the arch rivals goal posts and attempted to steal pies with her friends, and into a young woman who became President of her AYF chapter and joined the workforce as an office clerk for Manzik Wholesale Liquor. She definitely had her own unique file system but was adored by Mr. Maznik, none the less.

Mary’s spark was visible; it could be seen with the naked eye; her parents could see it; her oldest brother, Paul, could see it; her lovely sister, Margaret, could see it and her baby brother, Armen, too. Even a young and handsome wedding crasher named Andrew Poladian could see it!! One look is all it took and that spark led Mary and Andrew to Detroit to marriage, to new friends and family and their own three children, Thomas, Kenneth, and a sweet and perfect little baby girl, Andrea.

Mary was on one of the adventures of her beautiful life. As a new Detroiter, new wife and a new mom, she found herself traveling every summer back East to her old home, as her loving and devoted husband had promised. Her adventures continued throughout her beautiful lifetime with ultimate ups, like the birth of her adorable grandchildren, Mehri, Leo, Lucine, Shant, Simon and Andrew, to the ultimate low of losing her handsome husband.

Mary never lost her spark over those amazing years, always making friends, always finding a way to laugh. God may have called upon her, placing that out of our view. But I bet she’s laughing at this very moment with her family over a mean game of crazy eights!
