Caring for Our Neighbors

Winter Has Come

Diane Dunton Bruni, President.

A cold winter is upon us. It reminds me of when I was growing up in a small town in Maine. We had lots of snow. Snowbanks were high, there was lots of ice skating and sledding. I remember building a snow fort outside and when there was a full moon being outside in the fort and looking at the bright stars in the sky. I was fortunate. I had a warm home and food to eat. I did not know what it was like to be cold.

With the cold weather there are seniors in our community that are not as fortunate as many of us are. Their homes are cold. Insulation is not holding up to the cold. Plumbing is not working. Roofs have holes. This can all seem overwhelming. It would be easy to walk away but Millard Fuller’s, Fuller Center for Housing’s Founder, Theology of the Hammer teaches us to not walk away. We are asked to turn our faith into action. Your support helps us help others.

Roof Damage

We are currently working with two homeowners here in Windham to replace old, damaged insulation, and to install new heat pumps to heat their homes. Both homes need extensive work that will cost thousands of dollars each. One home had a big hole in the roof, a serious pipe leak, and dangerous mold issues. We have engaged several local contractors including a carpenter, a plumber, a cleaning/mold remediation company, and a firm to install a vapor barrier, new insulation, and heat pumps. We have helped the homeowners to get low-income assistance for the improvements through Efficiency Maine rebates. The homeowners are incredibly grateful for our

support.

Donate

We are deeply concerned that these are just two of many homes in our Sebago Lakes region that suffer from these same issues affecting the health and comfort of our aging neighbors. We could not do this work without volunteers from our partner churches, and financial support from our community.

Thank you to the members of our founding churches for support from the church budgets and from individual donations.
