A Celebration of Black History: Reflections on the history of surgery, pediatrics and ob/gyn

Thank you to everyone who participated in our tri-campus address, followed by a local presentation honoring the invaluable contributions of Black Americans in medicine and health care. The Columbus event featured a special ceremony unveiling the research poster Tragedy and Healing: The Impact of Two Black Surgeons in the Jim Crow South, which was awarded first place in the American College of Surgeons' 2024 History of Surgery Poster contest. NEW! Quarterly feedback response report

The Feedback Response Report (FRR) is a new column that will appear at least quarterly to update students on MUSM responses to their feedback in course/module evaluations, focus groups and other survey mechanisms. The column will coincide with FRR presentations in student council meetings, and presentation slides will be attached to the meeting minutes. FRR highlights from the February 4 student council meeting include:

  • Longitudinal curriculum changes in POH visit schedules and addition of the rural clerkship rotation to maintain mission-related learning.
  • Academic support enhancements such as expansion of UWorld access, updates to APS content, and sample 4 year elective schedules by specialty.
  • Career counseling yearly agendas for individual Deans of Student Affairs meetings aligned with student needs.
  • Earlier introduction to research and distinction programs in Year 1 orientation.
  • Changes in learning sessions from in person delivery to asynchronous recordings allowing flexible time for self-directed learning and preparatory study in Years 1 and 2.

See the February student council minutes for the complete FRR presentation.
