On January 27, 2025, the ICAA was proud to host an author presentation and celebration of Henry Hobson Richardson: Drawings from the Collection of Houghton Library, Harvard University (Monacelli Press / Phaidon), by Jay Wickersham, Chris Milford, and Hope Mayo. Selected by the ICAA for the Classical America Series in Art and Architecture, this is the first in-depth publication of drawings that reveal the creative genius of H. H. Richardson, the greatest American architect of the nineteenth century. The trove of 4,000 drawings, preserved since Richardson’s death, have been largely unpublished until now. This new book encompasses such masterpieces as Boston’s Trinity Church— voted the “most beautiful building in America” in 1885— the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail in Pittsburgh; the Ames Gate Lodge; and the Marshall Field Store and Glessner House in Chicago.

The ICAA, INTBAU, and The King's Foundation are pleased to continue their collaboration with The Architecture of Place: In Conversation with..., a series of interviews featuring three architects and scholars from different backgrounds and points of view: John Smylie, Tiffany Abernathy, and Dr. Patricia Canelas.
In this iteration of the series, Dr. Patricia Canelas interviews John Smylie about his professional work and design background.
John Smylie is Director of Place Lab, a design practice focused on place-making. The science of place-making involves adopting a contextual approach to architecture and urban design, strengthening local character and delivering spaces that are attractive to people and are vibrant and sustainable.
Over the years John’s projects have achieved a number of design awards. More recently, his work received an international Charter Award (Congress for the New Urbanism), RTPI Award for Best Regeneration Project in the UK and RICS Award for Best Regeneration Project in Northern Ireland.
John is also the Chapter Chair of INTBAU Ireland, an all-island chapter of the network.
John has previously served as Northern Ireland Advisor to the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community, now The King’s Foundation, an international organisation that teaches and demonstrates sustainable development, placing community engagement at the heart of its work.

By considering the thoughts of a number of past architects such as Alexander “Greek” Thomson and Louis Sullivan, this course traces the interpretation of classical architecture as an artistic building system dedicated to the aesthetics of affection and respect; this idea is also superimposed over the forms of several different buildings that were designed and built in different places, at different times and for different functions, in search of one of classicism’s greatest virtues: the expression and celebration of grace under pressure.
Nathaniel Robert Walker is an Associate Professor of Architectural History in the School of Architecture & Planning at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. After earning his Ph.D. at Brown University, he taught at the College of Charleston for eight years. Nathaniel specializes in the history of urban form, public buildings, and shared spaces such as squares and streets, with a special focus on the ways in which people have used architecture to imagine and shape their dreams of a better world.

In June 2024 the Southeast Chapter of the ICAA hosted the ICAA Garden Symposium: The Natural City Beautiful in Birmingham, Alabama. The Symposium included a series of events focused on the late 19th-century City Beautiful Movement as it evolved in the post-Civil War industrial city of Birmingham. Set within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the City of Birmingham and surrounding areas are one of the most geographically and environmentally diverse regions in the United States. The topography quickly moves from transportation-friendly valleys to mineral-rich mountains, a combination that has guided the development of both a practical urban city grid and contrasting picturesque hillside neighborhoods.
The Symposium's keynote lecture was delivered by William Gilchrist, Director of Planning and Building, City of Oakland, CA. Bill’s career has spanned public and private sectors. In his previous roles as director of Place-Based Planning in New Orleans, LA, and director of the Department of Planning, Engineering & Permits in Birmingham, AL, he oversaw the merger of city departments including engineering, public works, planning, urban design, and building and inspection services, as well as integrating permitting processes to improve efficiency and customer service. His work has been recognized by the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the National League of Cities, the American Planning Association (APA), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
