NEW YEAR = NEW STRATEGIES FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Start the new year off right by checking in on your business and making a plan to maximize 2025!

Licensing/Permitting

January is a great time for business housekeeping. Do any of your licenses or permits expire in 2025? How much do you need to budget to update any renewals? Log in to Chicago Business Direct, Inspections, Permitting, & Licensing Portal, and Department of Buildings Portal to check your deadlines.

Reporting

  • Remember to continue tracking accumulated paid leave and paid sick leave for W-2 reporting in accordance with city requirements.
  • Compile all of your tax documents to prepare for tax season and ensure you have a bookkeeping plan in place for 2025.
  • Get ahead of the Beneficial Ownership Information reporting requirement for the U.S. Government as part of the Corporate Transparency Act. While this requirement is temporarily paused, filing is free and can be done quickly and easily at fincen.gov/boi.

Online Presence

Ensure your website and other online platforms are updated with copyrights and other protections for 2025. Double check your Google Business Profile and social media accounts for accurate information about address, contact information, and business hours.

Food & Bev Businesses: Sidewalk Cafe Prep

Sidewalk cafe season is just around the corner and applications for renewal are now open! If you have a Retail Food License and plan on hosting a sidewalk cafe this season, get ahead of your application before renewals start in February:

  • Ensure your business liability insurance is up to date and includes the City of Chicago
  • Take a photo of your current Chicago Business License
  • Create or locate a site plan of your sidewalk cafe and and take a photo of the location where your cafe will be located

To discuss these strategies more in-depth, schedule an Uptown Business Center consultation.
