Honoring Dr. King's legacy

The annual holiday is a time when we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dedication to justice and equality through nonviolent action. This year's theme is Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365. Ceremonies marking Dr. King's birthday and legacy began after his tragic assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968, and have been held annually since. It wasn't until 1983 that the day became a federal holiday. Today, the holiday honors Dr. King's profound impact as a civil rights leader who spoke out against injustice, inequality, poverty and war.
