April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Dear Caregivers,
Help us kick-off Child Abuse Prevention Month on Friday, April 4, 2025, by wearing your favorite blue attire!
National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to recognize the important role that community partners and caregivers, just like you, play in protecting children. Child abuse prevention starts with each one of us. Together, we can make it easier for families to access supportive services and learn how to identify and build on family strengths. The theme for 2025 is “Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention.”
Focusing on ways to build and promote protective factors, in every interaction with families, is the best thing our community can do to prevent child maltreatment and promote unsurpassed child development. Protective factors are conditions that, when present in families and communities, increase the well-being of children and families, and reduce the likelihood of maltreatment. Identifying protective factors helps parents find resources and coping strategies that allow them to parent successfully.
Promoting the following factors is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect:
- Nurturing and attachment: Research shows that babies who receive affection and nurturing from their parents have the best chance of developing into children, teens, and adults who are happy, healthy, and possess self-protective factors such as relational, self-regulation, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development: Parents who understand the usual course of child development are more likely to be able to provide their children with respectful communication, consistent rules and expectations, developmentally appropriate limits, and opportunities that promote independence.
- Parental resilience: All parents have inner strengths or resources that can serve as a foundation for building resilience. Parents who can cope with the stresses of everyday life, as well as an occasional crisis, have resilience – the flexibility and inner strength to bounce back when things are not going well.
- Social connections: Parents with a network of emotionally supportive friends, family, and neighbors often find that it is easier to care for their children and themselves.
- Concrete supports for parents: Families whose basic needs for food, clothing, housing, and transportation are met have more time and energy to devote to their children’s safety and well-being.
We understand that caregivers and parents benefit greatly from resources that help them deal with the daily challenges of life. To that end, I encourage you to click here for direct access to information about educational training, parenting classes and so much more!
Last, but certainly not least, are you interested in helping to further raise awareness in the prevention of child abuse and neglect on your personal social media platforms? We hope so! Here are a few sample messages for your consideration. Thank you for the role that you play to make Clark County a better place for children and their families!
- April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize that we each play a part in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families in our communities right here in the Silver State. #GoBlueNV

Foster Change is the official Foster, Kinship, and Adoptive Family Association of Nevada representing your voice and is committed to YOU as the caregiver. We provide information, support, and resources to caregivers of young people in Nevada. We know first-hand the sacrifices caregivers make to open their homes to our vulnerable young people who need a safe space.
Foster Change is seeking to understand the experiences of caregivers who have faced paying out-of-pocket “overage” expenses/fees for daycare or who have had a disruption in daycare which has impacted their employment. We want to hear your stories. Please reach out via email to Heather Richardson (Foster Change Board of Directors Legislation Co-Chair) at heather.richardson@alumni.unlv.edu if you have experienced daycare challenges due to these additional fees.
The Nevada legislative session begins this month. We want to ensure your voices are amplified in Carson City. We also want to keep you updated regarding any legislation which may impact you or your families. Please join our Foster Change Town Hall meetings listed below to share your experiences with us and to receive updated legislative session information. We look forward to seeing you at our Town Hall meetings.
