A Little Leveneth the Whole Lump

📺️ 1 Corinthians 5 🔊

1It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

2And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

3For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

4In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

5To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

7Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Theme: Disorder in the Church (c 5-6)

Message: Paul Condemns Immorality in the Church (v 1-13)

1 Corinthians 5 Commentary

(5:1-13) Paul Condemns Spiritual Pride - The pride that characterized the Corinthian church (see 4:10, 18) had so blinded the believers that they were allowing flagrant sexual immorality to take place in their fellowship. Their pride may have been such that they refused to admit this sin and deal with it, or they may have been proud that this man was one of their spiritual people, honored for his “knowledge” or “wisdom.” Paul condemned the believers for allowing this sin to go on unchallenged in their midst. Believers today can learn from this passage about how the church must deal with flagrant and unrepented sin.

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue the book of 1st Corinthians with Chapter 5 and in our text we see Paul addressing sin in the Church and failure of the Church in Corinth to acknowledge and deal with sin affects the whole Church. In making application we are the Love the sinner but hate the sin. We must acknowledge and deal with open sin according to the Bible or the body will be infected. Today, the Church and body of Christ fail to acknowledge sin which has resulted in the Church losing its power and influence in the community. How about you? Do you acknowledge and deal with the sin in your life? Let us learn from our text today and the and the instruction of Paul to see that we must deal with sin both in our lives and in the body to see the power of God in our Churches.

Father in the Name and through the Blood of Jesus we pray that we would Take Today's Reading of Your Word and Give Us Understanding of Its Text, that You Apply this Word to Our Lives, and that you would help us grow in You. Father, Finally we Pray for Your Kingdom to come, that Your Will to be Done here on Earth as it is in Heaven. That You would Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen
