Dear Farm Friends,

New babies in the Mountain Bounty Farm world!

I raised both of my boys on the farm, and over the years we’ve tried to support parents on the crew along the way, with extra paid time off, and increased flexibility. This is important because our individualistic country provides very little support for parents and kids, and we want to keep valuable farm crew valued and connected to the farm as much as possible. Plus, just “yay” for kids.

Mountain Bounty farmers Kyla Roessler and Anna Bontrager both started working here in the field in 2020 before having babies, and since having children have continued on our Admin team. Both have plans to come back into the field at some point.

Anna had her first child James in 2021, and her second Walton in 2023. She currently works one morning a week communicating with members, setting up new accounts, doing recipes for the newsletter, and answering all your calls and emails. Anna has found that “It feels really good to stay connected to the farm, I would do more if childcare were more affordable. Local farming and the CSA model align with my values so I want to stay plugged in.”

Kyla had her son Quincy last May, and now also works two mornings a week communicating with members, as well as doing website updates and building the very complex weekly packing and delivery lists. Kyla likes staying connected to the farm, making a little extra income from home, and plans to be out in the field a bit this summer as her husband Cameron has summers off. Kyla feels "so lucky to still have a role at Mountain Bounty Farm", even if its not working directly in the fields. The community and team here is unlike anything I've ever experienced - I would be so disappointed to not be a part of it"

The newest farm baby is Camille, born on Dec 18 2024, to big daddy Cory Jones, our stalwart long-time farm manager and his partner Ellisha Wiles. Cory and Ellisha also live on site at the farm, so this should be a great baby year at the farm.

Together with new babies from many Mountain Bounty alumni, there’s quite a cute little farm posse going. And now we’re dreaming about creating a kid space on the farm to accommodate a childcare co-op, so parents can bring their kids to the farm to play in the mud together, eating fresh veggies and even perhaps take turns spending some time in the fields as their parents do.

-John

Bread Share CSA

Provided by Deer Creek Bakehouse Nevada City

Our new CSA Bread Share is a year round, weekly delivery of Country Sourdough Bread from Deer Creek Bakehouse in Nevada City.

Based in Nevada City, Deer Creek Bakehouse crafts rustic, naturally-leavened breads with an emphasis on whole grains, long, slow fermentation, and a bold bake to bring out the best character in every loaf. The Country Sourdough is their flagship loaf. It’s a great work horse sourdough, and pairs well with just about anything. All loaves are hand made with 100% organic flours, much of which is locally milled.

You have probably tried their bread local restaurants such as Lola (The National Hotel), Restaurant Dakan (The Stonehouse), Brewbilt Brewhaus, and more!

Each week you will receive a loaf of freshly baked bread, delivered to your convenient CSA pickup location. This subscription is limited to 50 members, so be sure to grab a spot soon! Deliveries begin THIS WEEK!

Recipes (including a "use it up" section for last week's leftovers), storage tips and inspiration:

"USE IT UP" WEEKLY RECIPE!

It seems like we are now in a cycle of consecutive winter storms, which are lovely when accompanied by a warming soup.

Soups are a great way to use up winter produce, and this Japanese Sweet Potato and Kabocha Squash Soup (Click here) is no exception - especially if you still have last week's Japanese sweet potatoes hanging around.

Braising Mix/Red Russian Kale tip - I also love to get creative and roughly chop up the braising mix or Red Russin kale and add to almost all soups, right before serving. This really bulks up their nutritional value and adds interesting texture. It is especially useful if you have some older greens that are a bit more tough.
