Uniting for Advocacy: Annual Public Policy Day

On February 5, United Ways across the state joined at the South Carolina State House for United Way's annual Public Policy Day. This year's focus was centered on raising awareness about the critical role of the 211 system in our communities.

The 211 information referral service is a free and confidential helpline available 24/7 to the community through calling 211, texting 211-211, or visiting SC211.org. 211 provides referrals to organizations for various crucial needs, including food assistance, healthcare, childcare, transportation, legal services and employment support.

Throughout the event, United Way representatives and supporters shared powerful stories of how the 211 system has connected South Carolinians with essential services during crises—such as Hurricane Helene, when over 5,300 calls and 7,000 resources were utilized to support those in times of need.

The key focus of these advocacy efforts was the request for legislative funding to strengthen and expand the 211 network and disaster response preparedness. This investment would enhance 211's ability to provide round-the-clock support and ensure that no South Carolinian is left without access to critical resources.

We would like to give a special thank you to our legislators for taking the time to engage in meaningful discussions with us, and to all who attended for their dedication to building stronger communities. Events like Public Policy Day serve as a reminder that when we unite for change, we make a lasting impact.
