Speaking Out Memories
In 2003, I lost my father to esophageal cancer. He had barely heard me talk of my dream to start an aphasia center/program that would create community and support individuals here in NC, but I know he would have been so happy. My family and friends wanted to donate to the cause, so knowing his priority was family, we set up a fund and took 3 families (5 people) to the 2008 Speaking Out in 2008!
Our group sat on the runway in RDU for almost 5 hours...a stressful start, but we shared so much laughter & conversation. We hung out with the grandmother/loving mentor of aphasia, Dr. Audrey Holland and learned about the "latest" aphasia research and products.
