BRRSD February Newsletter

We are BR!

I am writing to share our district response related to the recent changes governing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) which have made national headlines. We have instituted the following protocols for the purpose of protecting our students.

If an immigration agent seeks to or enters school grounds in an official capacity, the administration immediately contacts Robert Beers, Superintendent of Schools, and the District Security Coordinator.

  • Obtain information from the agent regarding their credentials, the purpose of the access request, and any documentation that authorizes school access.
  • Inform the agent that absent exigent circumstances, school personnel must first receive direction from the Chief School Administrator. An administrative immigration warrant is not sufficient to require admittance. For example, an ICE Warrant for Arrest of Alien (Form I-200) is a warrant often used by immigration officers but is not a judicially issued warrant.
  • The Superintendent of Schools will consult with district legal counsel to assess the documentation and determine appropriate next steps.
  • If the immigration agent declares the existence of an exigent circumstance and demands immediate access, comply with the request and immediately notify the Chief School Administrator.

Schools are not required to, and the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District will not provide information about students' attendance or locations or make students available on the spot without the opportunity to consult with the Chief School Administrator and district legal counsel.

Gifted and Talented Informational Sessions Draw Large Turnout

On Wednesday, January 22, the district held its annual Gifted and Talented Parent Information Night for K-8 programs and services. BRRSD offers a range of programs to meet the needs of students who possess or demonstrate high levels of ability in one or more content areas. Annemarie Mattia, the Director of Elementary Education, and Jason Mauriello, the Director of 21st-century Learning and Data Analysis, provided a comprehensive overview and answered parent questions at the end of the information session.

The information night was a great success. BRRSD is in the third year of universally screening all students for a continuum of services. As the district has expanded programs, more students are accessing these services. In grades K-4, over 400 students participate in G&T services, more than twice as many compared to two years ago. There was also increased attendance at our parent presentation. Approximately 190 parents attended the K-4 session, and 130 participated in the “E” information night! The presentation and additional gifted and talented programming information are on the district website

PowerSchool Data Breach:

We are writing to inform you about the recent cybersecurity incident with PowerSchool, the software vendor that provides our Student Information System (SIS).

On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, PowerSchool initiated notifying individuals whose information was determined to be involved.

PowerSchool has engaged Experian, a trusted credit reporting agency, to provide complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services to current and former students and educators with information exfiltrated from PowerSchool SIS. PowerSchool is doing this regardless of whether an individual’s Social Security Number was exfiltrated. In the coming weeks, Experian (on behalf of PowerSchool) will distribute direct email notifications to involved individuals (or their parent/guardian, as applicable) for whom PowerSchool has sufficient contact information.

PowerSchool has worked with Experian to set up a dedicated, toll-free call center to answer any questions associated with these offerings and the incident. All the information regarding the activation of and access to these services will be included in the email sent to you by Experian. Whether or not you receive an email, you may also visit PowerSchool’s website to learn how to activate the offering from Experian, linked here: http://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/notice-of-united-states-data-breach/.

Protecting our students and teachers remains our top priority. Thank you again for all of your support and understanding during this time.
