Hello LAWM friends,

Many factors can hold people back in life. Having a criminal record from a long-past mistake makes it difficult to get stable housing or pursue employment, since the record shows up with every application. As Roland's story illustrates (below), clearing a record through Michigan's Clean Slate laws can offer a fresh start and open up opportunities others take for granted.

People can also be hindered by not having a valid will to ensure that property and other assets remain in the family from generation to generation. We are excited to launch a new Family Foundations initiative to address this need - and we're looking for volunteers to help us. Read on for details!

Double congratulations to Roland!

“Roland” worked at the same West Michigan company for over 20 years before deciding to go back to school full-time. Just last month he graduated with a Bachelors degree in business! But the career dreams he’s pursuing were in danger of being quashed by decades-old convictions that continued to hinder his chances of getting a better job in his chosen field. The mistakes Roland made as a younger man – and that led to his criminal record – were something he always regretted. Yet until recently there seemed to be no way to move beyond their continued influence over his life, which limited his options for both employment and, at times, housing.

Roland heard about Michigan’s Clean Slate expungement laws and contacted us to see if he’d be eligible for help. One of our attorneys was able to walk Roland through the whole process of court hearings, representing him in the courtroom and making the case for expungement. The result? Roland now has an entirely clean slate again and can move on with his career goals free from the weight of those long-ago convictions.

Help us preserve clients' generational wealth!

Our Family Foundations clinics are an exciting new initiative to help low-income clients preserve their home or its assets across generations.

We're hosting several Family Foundations clinics this summer across our 17-county service area and are looking for volunteers to help.

Legal Aid out and about!

We're always delighted to be out in our local communities! Last month LAWM staff participated in an expungement fair in Benton Harbor and Neighbor Knowledge Exchange in Grand Rapids.

LAWM in the news!

The expungement fair was covered by WSBT and Managing Attorney Donald Roberts was quoted in this article on challenges for renters in St Joseph County, published by Watershed Voice.
