Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord

This Sunday, February 2, we will celebrate The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord, sometimes called Candlemas, which this year falls on a Sunday. This feast commemorates when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem where he was greeted by Simeon and Anna, 40 days after his birth. The Feast of the Presentation is one of the oldest feast days from the ancient Christian Church, dating back to at least the fourth century and it is customary on Candlemas to bless candles for the coming year. The candlelight is an outward and visible sign of Christ who illumines our heart and inner being.

Candlemas represents the final epiphany where Jesus is revealed as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” and the whole world. Some Christians around the world consider this the end of the Christmas season and wait to put the last of their decorations away and burn their Christmas greenery on Candlemas.
